  • Inquiry and Logical Form

    Open Access•Una Stojnić, M Stone•ARTICLE•Philosophical Perspectives•2025•References: 1

Joint inquiry requires agents to exchange public content about some target domain, which in turn requires them to track which content a linguistic form contributes to a conversation. But, often, the inquiry delivers a necessary truth. For example, if we are inquiring whether a particular bird, Tweety, is a woodpecker, and discover that it is, then our inquiry concluding in this fact would conclude in a necessity, and the form “Tweety is a woodpec…

  • Acts of Self-Representation: Nazi-Fascist Wartime Cultural Diplomacy

    Open Access•M Stone•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2024

This article probes culture as a site of both cooperation and rivalry by examining two exhibitions, of 1939 and 1942, which were jointly supported by Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy. These under-researched exhibitions reveal how the two regimes shared a common belief in culture as a tool of mobilization, but differed in their visions of race, culture, ideology and war

  • Fascism in America: Past and Present

Open Access•Geoff Eley, Thomas Weber et al.•BOOK•Fascism in America•2023

Has fascism arrived in America? In this pioneering book, Gavriel D. Rosenfeld and Janet Ward have gathered experts to survey the history of fascism in the United States. Although the US established a staunch anti-fascist reputation by defeating the Axis powers in World War II, the unsettling truth is that fascist ideas have long been present within American society. Since the election of Donald Trump as President in 2016, scholars have debated wh…

  • Gender and cultural bias in student evaluations: Why representation matters

    Open Access•Yanan Fan, Laura J Shepherd et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2019

Gendered and racial inequalities persist in even the most progressive of workplaces. There is increasing evidence to suggest that all aspects of employment, from hiring to performance evaluation to promotion, are affected by gender and cultural background. In higher education, bias in performance evaluation has been posited as one of the reasons why few women make it to the upper echelons of the academic hierarchy. With unprecedented access to in…

Open Access•M Stone, Giuliana Chamedes•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2018•Cited by: 9

In this introduction to the special issue on transnational anti-communism, Marla Stone and Giuliana Chamedes present the contours of a comparative approach to the study of anti-communism, raising issues of its origins and impact, and calling for attention to anti-communism as a discrete ideology with a defined set of beliefs and practices. The special issue of six articles, edited by Stone and Chamedes, focuses on anti-communism in the interwar p…

  • A Formal Semantic Analysis of Gesture

    Alex Lascarides, M Stone•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2009

The gestures that speakers use in tandem with speech include not only conventionalized actions with identifiable meanings (so-called narrow gloss gestures or emblems) but also productive iconic and deictic gestures whose form and meanings seem largely improvised in context. In this paper, we bridge the descriptive tradition with formal models of reference and discourse structure so as to articulate an approach to the interpretation of these produ…

  • Discourse coherence and gesture interpretation

    Alex Lascarides, M Stone•ARTICLE•Gesture•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In face-to-face conversation, communicators orchestrate multimodal contributions that meaningfully combine the linguistic resources of spoken language and the visuo-spatial affordances of gesture. In this paper, we characterise this meaningful combination in terms of the COHERENCE of gesture and speech. Descriptive analyses illustrate the diverse ways gesture interpretation can supplement and extend the interpretation of prior gestures and accomp…

    Open Access•M Stone•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•1993•Cited by: 14

On the morning of 28 October 1932, the tenth anniversary of the fascist assumption of power, Benito Mussolini inaugurated the most enduring propaganda event of the fascist dictatorship. As the Duce reviewed the assembled guards of honour and passed the cheering crowds to open the doors of the Mostra della rivoluzionefascista, the Exhibition of the Fascist Revolution, fascism invited Italians and foreigners alike to experience and participate in t…

  • Cross-Validatory Choice and Assessment of Statistical Predictions

    Open Access•M Stone•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Statistical…•1974

A generalized form of the cross-validation criterion is applied to the choice and assessment of prediction using the data-analytic concept of a prescription. The examples used to illustrate the application are drawn from the problem areas of univariate estimation, linear regression and analysis of variance.

  • The Aberfoyle Anticline, Callander, Perthshire

    Open Access•M Stone•ARTICLE•Geological Magazine•1957

The succession in the Upper Dalradian is described. The author follows Anderson in correlating the Leny and Ben Ledi Grits. Way-up evidence indicates that the Leny Limestone does not occupy a syncline as previously supposed, but is a stratigraphical intercalation in the Leny Grits. It is shown from way-up evidence and structural analysis that the Aberfoyle Anticline closes downwards and is a synform.
