  • Evaluating Model Predictive Performance in Confirmatory Factor Analysis with Binary Outcomes Using the InterModel Vigorish

Lijin Zhang, Charles Rahal et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2026

Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) has been widely used to assess the fit of theoretical measurement models to observed data. We introduce the InterModel Vigorish (IMV) to the field; a predictive fit index that offers novel perspectives for model comparison. The IMV complements traditional fit indices by offering additional information to support model evaluation, with a particular emphasis on a model's generalizability to the hold-out data. It a…

  • Bayesian Growth Curve Modeling with Measurement Error in Time

Lijin Zhang, Wen Qu et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2025

Growth curve modeling has been widely used in many disciplines to understand the trajectories of growth. Two popular forms utilized in the real-world analyses are the linear and quadratic growth curve models. These models operate on the assumption that measurements are conducted exactly at pre-set time or intervals. In essence, the reliability of these models is deeply tied to the punctuality and consistency of the data collection process. Howeve…

  • Evaluation and Comparison of SEM, Esem, and BSEM in Estimating Structural Models with Potentially Unknown Cross-loadings

Xiayan Wei, Jiasheng Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2022

Cross-loadings are common in multidimensional instruments; however, they cannot be appropriately addressed in conventional structural equation modeling (SEM) owing to the assumption of zero cross-loadings in standard confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Although it has been proposed that exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) and Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM) can address this issue more flexibly, their performance in struct…

  • Blcfa: An R Package for Bayesian Model Modification in Confirmatory Factor Analysis

Lijin Zhang, Junhao Pan et al.•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2021

In confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), post hoc model modification (PMM) indexes are often used to adjust for possible residual correlations between items. Although the approach is useful for improving model goodness-of-fit, it requires an iterative, one-item-pair-at-a-time procedure that can be tedious and prone to error. This paper provides a didactic discussion in the form of a tutorial of a more efficient and practical alternative and its imp…

  • Criteria for Parameter Identification in Bayesian Lasso Methods for Covariance Analysis: Comparing Rules for Thresholding, p -value, and Credible Interval

Lijin Zhang, Junhao Pan et al.•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2021

The lasso is a commonly used regularization method that is increasing used in structural equation models (SEMs). Under the Bayesian framework, lasso is rendered more flexible and readily produces estimates of standard errors and the penalty parameter. However, in practice, it remains unclear what decision rule is appropriate for parameter identification; in other words, determining what size estimate is large enough to be included into the model.…
