Psychometric Analysis and Cross‐Cultural Comparisons of the Italian and English Sense of Humor Scale Parallel Version Short Form
The Sense of Humor Scale parallel version short form (SHS‐PSF) is a novel self‐report measure aimed at describing personality traits related to enjoyment of humor, laughter, verbal humor, humor under stress, humor in everyday life, and laughing at oneself. The present study recruited Italian ( N = 298) and Canadian ( N = 910) participants to complete the Italian and English versions, respectively, to assess the measurement properties of the newly…
Can You Make Me Laugh? Toddlers’ and Parents’ Shared Positive Expressions in Playful Interactions
Laughter and smiling are frequently experienced in social settings, yet more research is required to delineate their development and dynamics. We investigated toddlers’ and parents’ shared positive expressions in playful interactions. We observed eighty 30‐month‐old toddler–parent dyads in two phases of 8 min in length. In each, one person was asked to make the other laugh (parent phase) or to show how much fun they were having (child phase). Usi…
Competitive Latent Structures for the Comic Style Markers
The Comic Style Markers (CSM) is a questionnaire that allows a fine-grained description of how people differ in the way they display humor in their daily lives. It includes 48 statements capturing eight interrelated, yet distinct comic styles: fun, irony, wit, sarcasm, benevolent humor, satire, nonsense humor, and cynicism. Despite the independent conceptual roots of these humorous domains, the analysis of the CSM scales' latent structure shows t…
Convergence and Psychometric Properties of Character Strengths Measures
This study compares the German versions of the original measure of character strengths (VIA-IS) with its latest revision (VIA-IS-R) regarding reliability and convergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validity. A sample of 499 German-speaking adults (79% women, mean age: 33.3 years) provided self-reports of character strengths (VIA-IS, VIA-IS-R) and several criteria: Core virtues, thriving, and moral behaviors. Results suggested that both me…
Part 1
In this first part of the “Festschrift for Willibald Ruch”, we collated seven commentaries, from board members and attendees of the Humour Summer School, Colin Cooper, Alyona Ivanova, Martin D. Lampert, Rod A. Martin, Paul E. McGhee and Frank ‘Appletree’ Rodden
Introduction to the “Festschrift for Willibald Ruch”
This introduction to the “Festschrift for Willibald Ruch” outlines his impressive achievements in humor research, especially in the areas of measurement, individual differences as well as models and theories. Though mostly focusing on the psychology of humor and the sense of humor, Willibald also pioneered interdisciplinary and cross-cultural humor studies. This Festschrift comprises seven invited commentaries and eight articles, which expand are…
Humor comprehension and appreciation
Humor comprehension and appreciation are two basic domains of humor research and central stages in humor processing. In the present study, 238 Italian adults rated 20 jokes to investigate how a humor comprehension task influences subsequent funniness ratings. Additionally, the relationships between humor comprehension and funniness were investigated for the total set of jokes, for individual jokes, and for jokes with different contents (neutral o…
Who shows which kind of humor? Exploring sociodemographic differences in eight comic styles in a large Chilean sample
The present study investigates mean‐level differences in eight comic styles (fun, benevolent humor, nonsense, wit, irony, satire, sarcasm, and cynicism) depending on the sociodemographic variables gender, age, education, political spectrum, and religious affiliation. A large and varied Chilean adult sample ( N = 1,272, 60.1% women; age M = 39.94, SD = 17.33) was recruited in face‐to‐face interviews and online testing. They completed self‐reports …
Comic styles and their relation to the sense of humor, humor appreciation, acceptability of prejudice, humorous self-image and happiness
The present study investigates the relationships of eight comic styles (fun, benevolent humor, nonsense, wit, irony, satire, sarcasm, and cynicism) with acceptability of prejudice (laughing at different groups and topics), humorous self-image (funniness and frequency of laughter), humor appreciation (funniness and aversiveness of cartoons with different structures and contents), and happiness. A representative Chilean adult sample ( N =857, 60.8%…
On the dimensionality of humorous conduct and associations with humor traits and behaviors
The aim of the present study is to explore higher-order dimensions of humorous conduct derived from 100 non-redundant and comprehensive statements. These dimensions are validated in self- and other-reports and their criterion validity is assessed by relating them to other humor concepts (temperamental basis of the sense of humor, attitudes towards laughter and being laughed at, humor appreciation and creation). Four broad dimensions (mean-spirite…
Broadening Humor
The present study introduces eight comic styles (i.e., fun, humor, nonsense, wit, irony, satire, sarcasm, and cynicism) and examines the validity of a set of 48 marker items for their assessment, the Comic Style Markers (CSM). These styles were originally developed to describe literary work and are used here to describe individual differences. Study 1 examines whether the eight styles can be distinguished empirically, in self- and other-reports, …
Psychometric evaluation of the revised Sense of Humor Scale and the construction of a parallel form
McGhee (1996, Health, healing and the amuse system: Humor as survival training . Dubuque: Kendall/Hunt; 1999, Health, healing and the amuse system: Humor as survival training (3rd edition) . Dubuque: Kendall/Hunt) proposed a model of the sense of humor including the six “humor skills” of enjoyment of humor, laughter, verbal humor, finding humor in everyday life, laughing at yourself, and humor under stress, measured with the Sense of Humor Scale …
Can self-defeating humor make you happy? Cognitive interviews reveal the adaptive side of the self-defeating humor style
The present set of studies employs two cognitive interviewing techniques (thinking aloud and online cognitive probing) of the scale assessing the self-defeating humor style, aiming at delineating the role that self-defeating humor plays in self-esteem and emotions. The self-defeating humor style comprises humor to enhance one’s relationships with others at the expense of oneself, and has often been related to lower well-being. The analyses are ba…

Does verbal labeling influence age differences in proactive and reactive cognitive control
The main goal of this study was to examine whether different types of verbal labeling can influence age-related changes in the dynamic control of behavior by inducing either a proactive or reactive mode of control. Proactive control is characterized by a strong engagement in maintaining task-relevant information to be optimally prepared while reactive control is characterized by a reactivation of task-related information during responding. To inv…
Humour styles, personality and psychological well-being
The Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) by In contrast to former humour instruments, the HSQ has strong relations to various measures of psychological wellbeing. However, its incremental validity in relation to basic personality traits has not been sufficiently studied. Two studies analysed how much unique variance the HSQ contributed to predicting psychological well-being over and above personality. While the affiliative, selfenhancing and self-def…
