INTRODUCTION: Human-animal interaction (HAI) has been linked to well-being across functional domains and throughout the lifespan. Limited research has explored specific types of informal HAIs with pets or the impact of HAI in daily life. METHODS: Over 2 weeks in 2021, caregivers of youth (N = 42; ages 6-17, M = 12.21; 50% male) reported daily on their child's pet interactions (seven HAIs [e.g., walking, petting, taking care of], time spent with p…
Family-of-Origin of Violence, Insecure Attachment, and Depression Symptoms in Emerging Adults
Purpose Family-of-origin violence (FOV) has been linked to numerous deleterious consequences in adulthood, including depression. Many individuals who experience FOV display anxious (i.e., fear of abandonment) and avoidant (i.e., fear of interpersonal intimacy) attachment styles. Higher levels of insecure attachment confer vulnerability for depression following conflict, whereas more secure romantic attachment attenuates the effects of violence ex…
Anxiety, Worry, and Difficulty Concentrating
Worry was associated with difficulty concentrating across three pandemic timepoints. • Anxiety predicted worry three months later, controlling for concurrent worry. • Worry partially mediated the path from T1 anxiety to T3 difficulty concentrating. • Mediation was not robust to controlling for outcomes at previous timepoints. Difficulty concentrating is an understudied cognitive phenomenon, despite its status as a diagnostic criterion for general…
Parent Emotion Socialization Framework During Early Childhood in Eastern Cultures
Parent emotion socialization (ES), the process through which caregivers influence the development and expression of emotions in children, needs to be interpreted within a sociocultural context. ES literature in Eastern cultures is emerging; existing research has almost exclusively focused on school‐age children and adolescents, and has generally involved families from one or two countries. The current study investigated the factor structure of ES…
Predictors and Mechanisms of Resilience for High School Students with ADHD
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has primarily been studied from a deficit-focused perspective. However, there are individuals with ADHD who exhibit resilience or a pattern of positive adaptation despite the risks associated with their diagnosis. The present study evaluated whether peer acceptance predicted resilience for adolescents with ADHD and if self-efficacy or a stress-is-enhancing mindset served as mechanisms of those relat…
Differential associations and concordance across measures of parent emotion socialization
Although parent ratings, adolescent ratings, and observations are all utilized to measure parent emotion socialization during adolescence, there is a lack of research examining measurement differences and concordance. Thus, the present study compared three measures of parent supportive and nonsupportive emotion socialization and examined whether parent and adolescent emotion dysregulation differentially related to these measures or moderated conc…
Prospective examination of psychological trauma among adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic
Findings highlight at-risk populations and suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in psychological trauma symptoms for approximately 20% of adolescents at some point during the first year of the pandemic. There is critical need to provide mental health services to adolescents, such as through school-based services, to reduce the negative long-term psychological impact of the pandemic. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserv…
Rumination as a Mechanism of the Longitudinal Association Between Covid-19-Related Stress and Internalizing Symptoms in Adolescents
Longitudinal Change in Adolescent Depression and Anxiety Symptoms from before to during the Covid ‐19 Pandemic
This study aimed to examine changes in depression and anxiety symptoms from before to during the first 6 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in a sample of 1,339 adolescents (9-18 years old, 59% female) from three countries. We also examined if age, race/ethnicity, disease burden, or strictness of government restrictions moderated change in symptoms. Data from 12 longitudinal studies (10 U.S., 1 Netherlands, 1 Peru) were combined. Linear mixed effect…
Covid-19 remote learning experiences of youth with neurodevelopmental disorders in rural Appalachia
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a major educational shift took place-the transition from face-to-face instruction to remote learning. Although this transition impacted all learners, it is speculated that groups of vulnerable youth (i.e., those with neurodevelopmental disorders, in rural areas, from low-income families) would demonstrate significant difficulties with remote instruction. However, no work to date has investigated remote learning in th…
Prospective impact of Covid‐19 on mental health functioning in adolescents with and without ADHD
BACKGROUND: The impact of chronic stressors like the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to be magnified in adolescents with pre-existing mental health risk, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study examined changes in and predictors of adolescent mental health from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States. METHODS: Participants include 238 adolescents (132 males; ages 15-17; 118 w…
Childhood ADHD Symptoms, Parent Emotion Socialization, and Adolescent Peer Problems
Reciprocal Relations Between Parenting Behaviors and Conduct Disorder Symptoms in Preschool Children
Biased self‐perceived social competence and engagement in subtypes of aggression
This study expands on prior research suggesting that children who either over- or under-estimate their social competence relative to others' reports are more likely to be aggressive. Linear and curvilinear associations between biased social self-perceptions and forms (physical vs. relational) and functions (proactive vs. reactive) of aggression were tested along with three moderators (peer rejection, social dominance goals, and child sex). Childr…
Emotion socialization practices in Latina and European-American mothers of preschoolers with behavior problems
The present study examined mothers' emotion socialization of 3-year-old children with behavior problems, to determine whether emotion socialization practices, as well as the relation between these practices and child functioning, varied across ethnicities. Participants were 134 preschoolers with behavior problems. Mothers were European American ( n = 96) and Latina American ( n = 38; predominately Puerto Rican). Audiotaped mother-child interactio…
