‘Mr. Preacherman, Should We Love Thy Neighbour?’: On Moral Understanding and Moral Change in Deep Moral Disagreements
This article examines what it means to respond, or fail to respond, to the individual realities of others in cases of deep moral disagreement concerning trans‐exclusionary sentiments. Building on a limitation we identify in Daniele Moyal‐Sharrock and Constantine Sandis' account of ‘bedrock gender’, we consider two readings of Kendrick Lamar's song ‘Auntie Diaries’ as an artistic intervention in contemporary debates on language, race, and trans po…
On Testimonial and Hermeneutical (In)justices in the Use of Trans Narratives in Bedrock Gender
In this article, we consider a recent philosophical attempt to narrate transgender experiences in response to what Miranda Fricker has termed ‘epistemic injustice’, against the background of highly polarized debates concerning trans identities in both academic philosophy and popular culture. We bring out some of the difficulties and challenges involved in doing epistemic justice to trans testimonies via an analysis and critique of Daniele Moyal-S…
Queer Love, Literature and Philosophy. On Reading The Argonauts
In this article, I suggest Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts challenges “epistemic habits” in contemporary critical thought on gender, politics, sexuality, intimacy, identity, and love. In particular, I focus on how Nelson through descriptions of queer life, love, and kinship articulates moral-existential and queer-philosophical perspectives on everyday life by bringing the “I-You” relationship to the fore of feminist and queer theoretical concerns. …
A Critique of Our Own? On Intersectionality and “Epistemic Habits” in a Study of Racialization and Homonationalism in a Nordic Context
This article discusses how debates regarding intersectionality enable self-reflexitivity, positionality and critique, but also risk becoming routinized gestures in activist and academic settings. Through reflections on the notions of epistemic habits and epistemic whiteness, the article discusses key critiques of intersectional analysis, such as tendencies to re-centre whiteness, as a methodological concern. To illuminate the argument, I consider…
