I can see the good, even when things around are rough: Gratitude among family caregivers of people living with early-stage Alzheimer's disease
The scientific understanding of gratitude has grown in recent years. However, research on the role gratitude plays in the lives of family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease in the early or begnning stages is limited. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to gain a rich understanding of gratitude through the narratives of 27 family caregivers of persons with early-stage Alzheimer's. Perceived benefit or burden? How positive and negative spiritual/religious coping impacts family caregivers of people with dementia
Spiritual/religious coping can be a significant resource for individuals and families who are caring for a loved one with dementia. Little is known, however, about how different forms of spiritual/religious coping impact caregivers’ experiences of burden and benefit. This study examines the relationship between positive and negative spiritual/religious coping and caregiver burden and benefit among a sample of caregivers of people with dementia. F…
The Relationships Among Health Literacy, Patient Activation, and Self-Care Behaviors in Adults With Heart Failure: A Cross Sectional Study
Despite current efforts, adherence to heart failure (HF) selfcare remains suboptimal. There is a need to identify modifiable factors that promote self-care adherence. Evidence suggests that patient activation and health literacy (HL) are modifiable and may be useful for improving HF self-care. However, more research is needed to understand the influences of these variables on HF self-care. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships be…
Caring for a family member with early stage alzheimer’s disease: Caregiver perceptions, connections, and relational dynamics with the sacred
Researchers have conceptualized spirituality as the search for or connection with the sacred – or that which is considered blessed, holy, or revered by each individual. Some perceive the sacred as their relationship with a divinity (e.g., God, gods, Higher Power). Others consider the sacred to be something bigger than themselves (e.g., the Universe, Nature, guiding life philosophy). The self may also be considered sacred by some. The current rese…
Does the Tough Stuff Make Us Stronger? Spiritual Coping in Family Caregivers of Persons with Early-Stage Dementia
Spiritual coping may be conceptualized as relying upon spiritual beliefs, practices and/or relationships as an aspect of navigating stressful or traumatic experiences. There is evidence that spirituality may be used as a resource and may cultivate growth for some in the midst of difficult life circumstances. There is limited research, however, on this phenomenon among family caregivers of persons living with a dementia, particularly those in the …
Does God Work in All Things to the Good of Those Who Love Him? Family Caregivers of Persons with Early-Stage Dementia Share Their Spiritual Struggles
Spiritual struggles are distressing thoughts, feelings, or shifts in behaviors pertaining to faith/life philosophy in response to traumatic/stressful experiences. There is limited research on this phenomenon among family caregivers of persons in the early-stages of dementia (PWD). The purpose of this qualitative study, therefore, was to better understand spiritual struggles in this population. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, we an…

Applying Multiple Methods of Systematic Evaluation in Narrative Analysis for Greater Validity and Deeper Meaning
Personal narrative is at the heart of how human beings share information, represent identity, and convey ideas. Narrative research is a form of qualitative analysis that assists researchers in gaining insight into the lived experiences of the persons they are studying within their unique life circumstances and contexts. Although many narrative investigations report themes from study data, there is no single, well-defined approach to data analysis…

Counteracting the Effects of Female Stereotypes on Television via Active Mediation
This article reports results of an experiment with 83 kindergarten through 6th-grade children conducted to determine the effectiveness of a theoretically based active mediation strategy for reducing the harmful effects of gender-stereotyped television. The researchers found that a mediation strategy derived from gender-schema theory led to less favorable evaluations of stereotyped television characters. It also led to (a) less positive evaluation…

Conversion and the Imitation of Christ in Anglican and Puritan Writing
In recent years a great deal of scholarly energy has been expended in attempts to identify differing religious parties and movements in Elizabethan and early Stuart England. On the one hand, J.F.H. New has described the actions of Anglicans and Puritans as “teleological acts – attempts to make practice conform to preconceived philosophies.” He believes that Anglican and Puritan doctrines derived from quite different conceptions of human moral cap…
