  • A Society within Society

Giorgos Charalambous, Christophoros Christophorou et al.•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 15

In this article we aim to contribute to the study of linkage by focusing on the Cypriot communist party—Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL), an exceptional case in European communism—between the mid-1980s and the present. Based on the distinction between participatory and environmental linkage, we explore three issues. First, we focus on the intensity of linkage processes through the examination of participation patterns and organisati…

  • Disengaging Citizens

    Christophoros Christophorou, Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The chief characteristic of this election was the significant rise in abstention, suggesting citizens' disengagement. The loss of influence of political parties is related to a long-term cumulative effect of disappointment arising from missed opportunities, including Cyprus's entry into the European Union and domestic shifts in power. Political leaders failed to secure expected benefits and offer new prospects that could mobilise and sustain part…

  • A New Communist Surprise – What's Next? Presidential Elections in the Republic of Cyprus, February 2008

    Christophoros Christophorou, Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2008•Cited by: 11•References: 7

The election of the communist party leader to the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus constituted a surprise for many, despite the party's broad appeal. This article argues that this achievement can be explained by the party's choices and adaptation to changing conditions on the island and in the world. Cautious changes to ideology kept on board old voters, while broadening the party's appeal beyond its traditional electorate. At the same time, …

  • An Old Cleavage Causes New Divisions

    Christophoros Christophorou, Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2007•Cited by: 14•References: 4

The change of government in 2003 and the 2004 referendum on the Annan Plan influenced the outcome of the 2006 parliamentary elections. A long-standing cleavage based on choices for a solution to the Cyprus issue surfaced in 2004 and caused deep divisions and a large swing vote, triggering realignment of the electorate. However, resistance by the two major parties, which countered by promoting the left–right cleavage and party loyalty, curtailed t…

  • Party Change and Development in Cyprus (1995–2005)

    Christophoros Christophorou, Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 8

The political parties in Cyprus changed their organization, functioning and values in response to challenges relating to the country's accession to the European Union, and changes in society. Common trends in the changes were connected to broadening the rights of party members and recourse to communication specialists. Parties sought efficiency through professional administrators and flexible executive bodies. Decline in mobilization and loyalty …

  • South European Briefing

Christophoros Christophorou, Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2005•Cited by: 9

The article describes the background to the referenda in Cyprus on the United Nations plan for the reunification of the island. It examines the role of the international community and domestic actors in the campaign and analyzes the outcome. It explains why in the Greek Cypriot community, the status of refugee and socioeconomic criteria had limited impact on the vote, while in the Turkish Cypriot community the indigenous population offered overwh…

  • A European Course with a Communist Party

    Christophoros Christophorou, Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The outcome of the February 2003 Cyprus presidential elections confirmed the influence of the communist AKEL (Progressive Party of the Working People). The party's ambitions to assume state responsibilities, expressed since 2001, were fulfilled; its favoured candidate, the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Tassos Papadopoulos, was elected to the presidency. Success in the first round was founded on a strategy of alliances, the persistence of ideo…

  • Election Report - Consolidation and Continuity Through Change

    Chrıstophoros Christophorou•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2001•Cited by: 9

Changes in party influence in the May 2001 elections were of limited size, confirming that continuity in vote pattern is a rule in Cyprus parliamentary elections. Parties had relatively small gains or losses, consolidating to a very high degree their share in previous elections. When these changes are seen in perspective, though, they are indicative of gradual changes and shifts in vote preference. In this context, there is a rebalancing or a new…
