Antiracism across the curriculum
In the summer of 2020, a group of 16 faculty and staff working at a small, regional public college that is part of a large state-wide university system created a grassroots initiative to normalize the teaching of race, racism, and antiracism across courses in a variety of disciplines. In this article, we provide an overview of the program along with case studies written by four faculty who transformed their courses to center antiracist content. W…

Separate Spheres and Separate Roles
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the United States, women were limited in their ability to participate in sport and physical activity. The prevalent thinking of the time assigned (white, middle/upper class) women separate roles. Based on Christian religious beliefs rooted in Victorian era ideology, women were expected to maintain a level of domesticity and morality in order to remain feminine. Similarly, medical professiona…
Roller Derby
Roller Derby has a long and fascinating history. It began as an endurance fad in the 1930s, a Depression Era entertainment, and then transformed into a full-contact game with an appeal to both in-person spectators and television audiences. Yet it eventually evolved into a women's sport with a feminist do-it-yourself mentality. Michella M. Marino's Roller Derby: The History of an American Sport expertly weaves a chronological story of this traject…
The fastest skaters in the world’
During the Depression Era, American entrepreneur and promoter, Leo Seltzer, invented a new sport – roller derby. Combining the endurance of entertainment spectacles, such as dance marathons and walkathons, with the popular pastime of roller skating, Seltzer drew large crowds to watch as skaters attempted to travel thousands of miles on a track. In these dismal economic times, Seltzer found success in his new sport. One reason for his success come…

Rewarding Participation in Youth Sport
Recently, many parents, sportswriters, and social critics have expressed concern for young athletes being given participation trophies. They claim that it fosters a sense of entitlement and teaches youngsters that they do not need to earn rewards. I argue that youth sport participants should not be rewarded only for participation, but that they should be given opportunities for earing awards beyond mere victory. This is because a variety of value…

A Brief Taxonomy of Sports that Were Not Quite American National Pastimes
Several sports have served as American national pastimes over the course of the nation's history. Horse racing, hunting, prize fighting, baseball, football, and basketball have waxed and waned in a long series of debates over what constitutes ‘true' national pastimes. Unlike some nations that have declared national pastimes by governmental fiat, US national games emerge from organic and sometimes chaotic cultural processes. An alternative history…
