    Doriane Gomet•ARTICLE•Archives Juives•2023

This work examines the way in which two French Jewish sportsmen, Alfred Nakache and Young Perez, made a place for themselves in the French collective memory between the end of the Second World War and the most contemporary period. Based on a variety of sources, including a study of the press, oral testimonies, and private and institutional archives, the study reviews the different phases of memory that have followed one another since 1945. Thanks…

    Jean-Nicolas Renaud, Doriane Gomet•ARTICLE•Staps•2022

  • Maurice Baquet

    Doriane Gomet, Thomas Bauer•ARTICLE•Staps•2022

  • How hiking reinvented rural areas

Open Access•Michaël Attali, Yohann Fortune et al.•ARTICLE•Rural History•2022•Cited by: 2

This study looks at the role of hiking in the development and the identity of a French region. Both rural and agricultural, Brittany saw a reorganisation of its territory during the 1970s, partly due to activities such as hiking. By becoming a political focus, the activity contributed to making paths, only previously used for field labour, a tool for territorial development. It also rejuvenated Brittany’s regional identity as it explored a forgot…

  • The Sporting Club Maccabi de Paris in the Interwar Period (1924–1939)

Étienne Pénard, Michaël Attali et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2022

The Sporting Club (SC) Maccabi de Paris is both the first longstanding Jewish sports club in France and the most influential. Founded in 1924 by Jews from Eastern Europe and Russia, the club disseminated ‘philanthropic’ Zionism during the interwar period, uniting Jews from different communities around the idea of creating a Jewish State in Palestine. At the time, sport was considered a tool for regenerating bodies to create a ‘new Jewish man’. Th…

    Jean-Nicolas Renaud, Doriane Gomet•ARTICLE•Staps•2021

  • Victor Young Perez

Doriane Gomet•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2020

Although cinema took up the issue of sport in Nazi concentration and extermination camps as early as 1963 with the film The Boxer and Death, it was only in 2013 that Jacques Ouaniche released the film Victor Young Perez, a film completely dedicated to the career of the French boxer of the same name, who was crowned world boxing champion in 1931 and deported to Auschwitz in October 1943. Rooted in cultural history, this paper looks at the politica…

  • Éducation des corps et disciplinarisation

    Doriane Gomet, Michaël Attali•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2017•Cited by: 2

While sport was recognised as having educational virtues as early as the late nineteenth century in England, the situation in France was quite different. Considered to be both futile and dangerous, this social practice only featured anecdotally in manuals and official instructions directing physical education at school until 1967. The relationship with sport raises deep questions concerning the body’s place in education. More precisely, it emphas…

  • Between Survival Strategy and Bloody Violence

Doriane Gomet•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2016

Concentration and extermination camps were micro-societies characterized by inequality: the SS reigned supreme over a multitude of prisoners who were either exterminated upon their arrival, or died of hunger and ill-treatment while a few privileged ones enjoyed much more decent living conditions. This disturbing reality is studied here through a singular cultural practice: boxing. The way the SS exploited the talent of prisoners with boxing skill…

  • From Punishment to Death

Doriane Gomet•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2013

Rooted within WW2, this study aims at exploring the body practices that Nazis imposed on women in concentration camps. It is based on spontaneous and sought testimonies, both written and oral. The analysis reveals that body practices were widely used by the Schutzstaffel (SS) to weaken or even to exterminate deported women. However, according to the very reasons of their deportation – for persecution or repression measures – the forms and objecti…

  • To be a Jew and Champion in Vichy's France

Doriane Gomet, Thierry Terret•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2009•References: 5

Set against the background of France's cultural history during the Second World War, this biographical study concerns Alfred Nakache, a swimming champion of Jewish origin. Through his conditions of existence, the study amply demonstrates the exclusion, followed by the extermination, of Jews in France. At a time when the ‘Révolution Nationale’ (National Revolution) had been established as political dogma, it also demonstrates the bipolarity of the…
