  • In Search of a Durable Solution

Hardika Dayalani, Jonathan S Blake et al.•BOOK•In Search of a Durable Solution•2021

The world's 30 million refugees live in limbo waiting for solutions, while their host countries experience ever-greater strains. The authors found that only one-third of refugees return home after ten years. Returns have not kept pace with new displacement, leading to a growing total number of refugees. New solutions for safe refugee return are needed. The authors examine barriers to, and facilitators of, the safe and sustained return of refugees…

  • Online Outsourcing

Peter Glick, Louay Constant et al.•BOOK•2020

In this Perspective, the authors review potential benefits and drawbacks of online outsourcing, including microwork and freelancing, with special reference to its potential for youth employment and poverty reduction in Indonesia. Although there are many constraints to the growth of online outsourcing, Indonesia's favorable business environment and large economy suggest that there is also significant potential for expansion of online outsourcing.

  • Opportunities for All

Krishna Kumar, Faith Unlu et al.•BOOK•Opportunities for All•2018

Over 5 million Syrian refugees entered Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon due to the civil war. This report examines the labor market for refugees in these countries. In Turkey, a barrier was speaking Turkish; in Jordan and Lebanon, the refugees' arrival exacerbated existing economic slowdowns. Working legally was a challenge for all. Recommendations are tailored to each country in order to improve the socioeconomic environment for all.

  • Youth in Jordan

Ryan Brown, Louay Constant et al.•BOOK•Youth in Jordan•2014

Youth unemployment in Jordan remains high, and labor-force participation low, particularly among young women. Graduates do not possess the requisite technical and soft skills needed for the jobs they prefer. Facing poor economic prospects and inadequate income, many youth are unable to marry, live independently, or support a family. This study examines the perceptions of young Jordanians on issues relevant to their transitions into adult roles

This research brief describes an analysis of the reform efforts of four Arab region nations (Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates) in response to human capital challenges they face in preparing their people to work in a global environment.

The effect of campaign contributions on legislative roll call voting has long been the subject of debate. This study weighs into this debate by examining the impact of teachers' union contributions on votes on two school choice bills in the Florida House of Representatives during the 1998 and 1999 sessions. I find that different types of school choice bills evince different effects of campaign contributions from teachers' unions. Specifically, ca…
