  • Has China caught up to the U.S. in AI research? An exploration of mimetic isomorphism as a model for late industrializers

Open Access•Chao Min, Yi Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2026

Artificial intelligence represents a twenty-first century critical technology. We test for and find rapid learning and differentiation characterizing China’s AI development process as a model with a better fit than the Foreign Direct Investment/export-oriented growth of earlier Asian industrializers. China outproduces the U.S.A in both annual and cumulative numbers of AI papers, but quality measures show China lagging the U.S.; even so, China’s A…

  • International science collaboration as a complex adaptive system in the work of Loet Leydesdorff

    Open Access•Caroline S Wagner•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2025

Loet Leydesdorff revolutionized science studies by characterizing scientific communications as an emergent social system that exhibits nonlinear dynamics including feedback loops, emergence, and self-organizational traits. A network of international collaboration (derived from coauthorships) was an appealing system to investigate because it reflects a next-order dynamic that feeds back to the national and local levels. Leydesdorff and colleagues …

  • From Disciplinary Depth to Interdisciplinary Breadth

    Open Access•Caroline S Wagner, Jos C N Raadschelders•ARTICLE•The American Review of Public…•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 14

This article examines the evolution and academic status of Public Administration (PA) as a field of study. Using bibliometric analysis of 66 PA journals from 2008–2018, the authors trace PA's development through three phases: 1) an early developmental period drawing from multiple disciplines (late nineteenth century to 1950s), 2) a more inward-focused disciplinary period establishing theoretical identity (1950s-1990s), and 3) a mature interdiscip…

  • Developing an index of national research capacity

    Open Access•Caroline S Wagner, Travis A Whetsell•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2024

We test the feasibility of incorporating broad social, political, and governance indicators with standard metrics as a way to enrich assessment of national research capacity. We factor analyze two sets of variables for 174 countries from 2012 to 2021, one being tradtional measures associated with national science and technology capacity, such as spending, and a second being broader social, political, and governance measures, such as academic free…

  • Interdisciplinarity as diversity in citation patterns among journals

Open Access•L Leydesdorff, Caroline S Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Informetrics•2019

Questions of definition and measurement continue to constrain a consensus on the measurement of interdisciplinarity. Using Rao-Stirling (RS) Diversity sometimes produces anomalous results. We argue that these unexpected outcomes can be related to the use of “dual-concept diversity” which combines “variety” and “balance” in the definitions ( ex ante ). We propose to modify RS Diversity into a new indicator (DIV) which operationalizes “variety,” “b…

  • The Continuing Growth of Global Cooperation Networks in Research

Open Access•Caroline S Wagner, Han Woo Park et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2015

Global collaboration continues to grow as a share of all scientific cooperation, measured as coauthorships of peer-reviewed, published papers. The percent of all scientific papers that are internationally coauthored has more than doubled in 20 years, and they account for all the growth in output among the scientifically advanced countries. Emerging countries, particularly China, have increased their participation in global science, in part by dou…

  • International collaboration in science

Open Access•L Leydesdorff, Caroline S Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•El Profesional de la Informacion•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 2

The network of international co-authorship relations has been dominated by certain European nations and the USA, but this network is rapidly expanding at the global level. Between 40 and 50 countries appear in the center of the international network in 2011, and almost all (201) nations are nowadays involved in international collaboration. In this brief communication, we present both a global map with the functionality of a Google Map (zooming, e…

  • Seeing Eye to Eye

    Open Access•J W Neal, Elise Cappella et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 10

This study examines the association between classroom characteristics and teacher-student agreement in perceptions of students' classroom peer networks. Social network, peer nomination, and observational data were collected from a sample of second through fourth grade teachers (N=33) and students (N=669) in 33 classrooms across five high poverty urban schools. Results demonstrate that variation in teacher-student agreement on the structure of stu…
