  • Farewell to Fortune

    Open Access•Anthony J Parel, Anthony Parel•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2013•References: 1

Machiavelli's argument in chapter 25 of The Prince for resisting Fortune is no longer persuasive. The reason is that it is based on the outmoded Ptolemaic cosmology. With that cosmology long discarded, it is time to discard the political philosophy based on it. But discarding the political philosophy does not mean discarding the chapter. On the contrary, we should study the chapter with renewed diligence as part of the history of Machiavelli's po…

    Open Access•Anthony J Parel•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This article explores Mahatma Gandhi's contributions towards the evolution of the modern Indian political canon. Beginning with the Arthasastra, classical India had a political canon of its own. It flourished for over a millennium, but it suffered near extinction with the introduction in the nineteenth century of the Western political canon by the colonial state. Gandhi in the twentieth century intervened and challenged the dominance of the Weste…

  • Hind Swaraj: 'Hind Swaraj' and Other Writings

Mohandas Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi et al.•BOOK•Gandhi•1997

Hind Swaraj is Mahatma Gandhi's fundamental work. It is a key to understanding not only his life and thought but also the politics of South Asia in the first half of the twentieth century. In his Introduction, Anthony Parel sets the work in its historical and political con…

  • The Question of Machiavelli's Modernity

    Open Access•Anthony J Parel•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•1991•Cited by: 5•References: 1

That Machiavelli is an innovator of political philosophy is universally acknowledged. The program of innovation is outlined in The Prince, chapter 15: he wants to depart from the orders of his predecessors. The goal of the new philosophy is “effectual truth,” and not the imagination of it. Actual states, not “imagined republics and kingdoms” are its real concerns. The distinction between how one lives and how one ought to live is still made, but …

  • Values of Closed Society

    Open Access•Anthony J Parel, Anthony Parel•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•1982•Cited by: 1

The premise of this essay is that although there can be a certain degree of openness in a good political society, the idea remains valid that all political societies, without exception, are fundamentally closed systems. This means that, no matter how progressive a political system believes itself to be, it exists ultimately for the protection and advancement of the values and interests of a particular exclusive group and not for the defense and a…
