‘Connected or committed critic?’ Teologies nagedink oor die vraagstuk van ‘Binnestander’- of ‘Buitestander’-kritikus in Suid-Afrika
‘Connected or committed critic?’ Theologically pondered on the issue of ‘Insider’- or ‘Outsider’ critic in South Africa: During the beginning of 2023, a conference was organised by a study group to be held in Stellenbosch later that year with the focus on the ideology of apartheid in South Africa, with special reference to prof. B.B. Keet, one of the first theologians to oppose this ideology. The author of this article was invited to attend the c…
Iustitia
Iustitia: Theological-ethical perspectives on the concept of ‘justice’ with particular reference to the position of Augustine and his far-reaching influence. Last year, at a conference of the ‘Kerkhistoriese Genootskap’ of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (NHKA), the theme of ‘geregtigheid’ [righteousness] was investigated from various angles. The author of this article was invited to present on the views of the church father, Augustine…
Teologies nagedink oor W.J. Snyman as ekumeniese teoloog
Although Snyman was not an active publisher and his written heritage not impressive, one could argue that what he did publish, especially when his contribution on synodical level is considered, makes him one on the most influencial theologians, and especially ecclesiologians in the GKSA during the 20th century. In the first place, one could refer to his contribution with regard to the relation between the so-called ‘younger’ and ‘older’ churches …
Predestination and ‘pre-activation’
In the first part of this article, the classic as well as modern interpretations of the doctrine on predestination (Augustine, Calvin, Dort/Barth, Smit, Van der Walt) is investigated, while in the second part, I try to answer the question whether this (sometimes sharply criticised) doctrine does not make men careless and profane. Or does this doctrine rather stimulate and activate individual, ecclesiastical and social activities in the societal, …
Experimental co-design of jewelry from Makalani nut
This paper studies creative possibilities of co-designing with the Makalani nut when crafting and jewelry manufacturing techniques meet. The study reflects on how the artisan craft of carving, based on a rich indigenous knowledge, and previously not yet included in the field of fine jewelry, could create new artifacts that could support selfemployment and income generation to the crafting indigenous communities of Namibia. The co-design experimen…
A reformed-theological engagement with the resurrection of Jesus Christ
In this article, the author investigates the manifold interpretations that were given to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is a topic which has caused many disturbances in the Christian church right from the very beginning and is therefore not a modern phenomenon, although a more critical approach has gained momentum since the Aufklärung of the 18th century with its rationalism and positivism. The resurrection is not an everyday experience a…
Is Christus verdeeld?” Nadenke oor die teologiese regverdiging van kerkverdeeldheid en kerkskeuring
“Is Christ divided?” Reflections on the theological justification of church disunity and church schismIn this article the author investigates the question whether a church schism could ever be justified. He considers on the one hand the Biblical message on church unity and on the other hand the many justifications of church disunity (schism). He concludes that most of these justifications are unacceptable rasionalisations and that Post-Reformatio…
Die Nuwe Hervorming
The New Reformation: Expectation or frustation? In the Reformed-Christian tradition the idea of a continuing reformation is – and should never be questioned: “ecclesia reformata semper reformanda”. The relevant question should be: what kind of reformation should be expected? In this article the author critically investigates the claims of the so-called New Reformation that were widely discussed in daily newspapers during 2002. The views of the Ne…
John Calvin on the kingdom of God and eschatology
In this article the author investigates Calvin’s view on the kingdom of God and eschatology. The first question to be answered is: how does one know (anything about eschatology)? Calvin’s answer is clear: only through the Word of God. The author continues to illustrate that for Calvin the expectation of the kingdom and the eschaton does not frustrate or annihilate the present, but stimulates and directs human activities. Attention is also paid to…
