The Relationship between Street Revitalization Project and Gentrification
The concept of gentrification was first introduced by Ruth Glass in the 1960s to describe the displacement of working-class communities in urban neighborhoods. Since the 1990s, this process has become more diversified and widespread under the influence of neoliberal urban policies and globalization. In Türkiye, gentrification examples have emerged particularly in the 1980s in major cities such as Istanbul and Ankara, encompassing both residential…
Can mixed-income housing reduce socio-spatial stigmatization? The case of Çinçin, Ankara
The mixed-income housing approach suggests that stigmatization will decrease when different socio-economic groups live together in the same residential area. In this context, the study aimed to examine how the mixed-income housing approach transforms stigmatized spaces and the social stigma that is associated with them. The Ankara-Çinçin region, where the Gültepe Neighborhood (2nd Stage Site), the focus of the case study, is located, is stigmatiz…
Urban regeneration in response to natural disasters
Urban regeneration has been promoted as a key strategy for disaster risk reduction, yet its effectiveness during major natural disasters remains under-evaluated. This study addresses the central problem of assessing whether urban regeneration implementations in designated at-risk areas effectively mitigated the impacts of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Türkiye. Despite extensive urban regeneration policies under Disaster Law No. 6306, ther…
Plan Interventions Through Revisions/Changes Within the Scope of Disaster Law No. 6306
This study analyzed, within the scope of disaster law, the suitability of intervention methods used via revisions and changes in plans designed for reserve building areas and areas designated as at-risk. A four-stage methodology was employed: collecting archival documents, digital data, and interview findings; performing a comparative technical analysis of the abrogated and current zoning plans regarding density, social infrastructure, transport …
Spatial Planning and Flood Resilience
This study examines how spatial factors amplified the 2021 Bozkurt flood and whether post-disaster plans reduced them. Using field observations, interviews, and layered spatial analysis (slope, morphology, land use, hydrological overlays), the study applies the Disaster Resilience of Place (DROP) framework: exposure, inherent resilience, adaptive recovery. Four drivers emerge: narrow valley morphology with rapid runoff, enclosed tributaries, exte…
Examination of emergency assembly areas based on planning criteria after the two major earthquakes on 6 February, 2023
This study aimed to examine the compliance of post-disaster emergency assembly areas with their planning criteria in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province. This district is one of the settlements that was most affected by the two big earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye on 6 February 2023. The emergency assembly areas were evaluated qualitatively based on the criterion of “appropriateness”, with the sub-variables of “usability”, “accessibil…
