  • From shutdown to reopening

Yanan Lin, Stephen X Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2025

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its associated lockdowns put many tourism businesses on hold. Although these lockdowns have been lifted, not all tourism entrepreneurs reopened their businesses. While prior research has extensively explored the post-pandemic recovery of tourism businesses, there has been relatively limited attention given to the determinants of tourism entrepreneurs to reopen their businesses post-crisis. Drawing on upper …

  • Causation processes and innovation strategy in small- and medium-sized firms in emerging countries

Open Access•Gordon Liu, Stephen X Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Technological Forecasting and…•2025

In the dynamic and resource-constrained environment of emerging countries, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face unique challenges in pursuing innovation strategy. This study addresses a critical gap in understanding how founder-CEOs' causation processes interact with human capital to shape SMEs' innovation strategy. While previous research has separately explored the impact of causation processes on innovation and the influence of foun…

Open Access•Irina Pavlova, Aleksandra M Rogowska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2024

The study compared the mental health of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A repeated online cross-sectional study was performed twice among university students in Ukraine: in November 2020 (Pre-war sample, n = 752) and September-October 2022 (During-war sample, n = 862). The survey measured life satisfaction (SWLS), perceived stress (PSS-10), anxiety (GAD-7), and depression (PHQ-9). Stress, anxi…

  • A Quantum view of entrepreneurial opportunity

Open Access•Jiyao Chen, Stephen X Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2024

This article sheds new light on the debate between the Discovery and Creation views of entrepreneurial opportunity by drawing on quantum theory. We develop the Quantum view of opportunity, which explains how opportunity is both discovered and created. The Quantum view holds that the ontology and epistemology of opportunity are fundamentally inseparable, which explains why opportunity can never be fully specified. We argue, similar to the Discover…

  • Preference for vaccinated venues

Stephen X Zhang, Ganghua Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2023

This research examined the roles of individuals’ beliefs in COVID-19 vaccine adoption rate and side effects on their preferences for visiting vaccinated venues based on protection motivation theory and health belief model. An experiment of 345 adults in Peru, a popular tourism country heavily hit by COVID-19, revealed that individuals in the no ‘herd immunity’ condition and individuals in the ‘no evidence of side effects’ condition preferred vacc…

  • Mental health symptoms and coping strategies among Ukrainians during the Russia-Ukraine war in March 2022

Open Access•Wen Xu, Irina Pavlova et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2023

CONTEXT: The Russian attack on Ukraine has been ongoing since February 24, 2022. Nevertheless, no research has documented the mental health of Ukrainians during the biggest land war in Europe after the Second World War, or how Ukrainians cope with the impact of the war. OBJECTIVES: To provide the prevalence rates of symptoms of psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia; and to link them with Ukrainians' productive coping strategie…

  • Predicting Managers' Mental Health Across Countries

Open Access•Lun Li, Stephen X Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: There is limited research focusing on publicly available statistics on the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic as predictors of mental health across countries. Managers are at risk of suffering from mental disorders during the pandemic because they face particular hardship. Objective: We aim to predict mental disorder (anxiety and depression) symptoms of managers across countries using country-level COVID-19 statistics. Metho…

BACKGROUND: The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted adversely upon the mental health of millions of people worldwide. Impacts on the mental health conditions and the associated predictors relating to adults in Pakistan, the fifth most populous country in the world, during the COVID-19 remain understudied. Our aim was to investigate distress, anxiety, and overall mental health and their associated predictors among Pakistani adults in this pan…

  • Predictors of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms in Brazil during Covid-19

Open Access•Stephen X Zhang, Hao Huang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil is extremely severe, and Brazil has the third-highest number of cases in the world. The goal of the study is to identify the prevalence rates and several predictors of depression and anxiety in Brazil during the initial outbreak of COVID-19. We surveyed 482 adults in 23 Brazilian states online on 9-22 May 2020, and found that 70.3% of the adults ( n = 339) had depressive symptoms and 67.2% ( n = 320) had anxiety sy…

Open Access•Huiyang Dai, Stephen X Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Research identifying adults' mental health during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic relies solely on demographic predictors without examining adults' health condition as a potential predictor. This study aims to examine individuals' perception of health conditions and test availability as potential predictors of mental health-insomnia, anxiety, depression, and distress-during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey of 669 adults in…

  • Advancing entrepreneurship as a design science

    Open Access•Stephen X Zhang, Elco Van Burg•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2020

Scholars have advocated the development of entrepreneurship as a design science. One foundational challenge in a design science is to identify design principles. We argue that a particular field can draw on a design knowledge from different design sciences to develop design principles. In particular, we show that entrepreneurship research can learn from one branch of artificial intelligence studies called “genetic algorithm,” which is a design fi…

  • Exploring an innovative design for sustainable urban water management and energy conservation

Stephen X Zhang, Niranjan Pramanik et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

Large areas of our cities are taken by impervious areas, which reduce infiltration and increase peak flows, leading to flash floods and rendering less water for storage and use. At the same time, urban water demand is growing at an unsustainable pace. An innovative system design combining permeable pavements with underground water storage is proposed to reduce runoff peaks, store water, treat pollutants, lower ambient temperatures (heat island ef…
