Open Access•Tatyana Bakhmetyeva, Tatyana V Bakhmetyeva•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2026

This article examines the 1928 German–Soviet Alai–Pamir expedition as a moment when different scientific traditions, political ambitions and bodily practices met in the high-altitude borderlands of Central Asia. Focusing on the mapping of the Fedchenko glacier, it argues that knowledge emerged not simply from instruments and protocols, but from the difficult encounter between bodies, technical tools and a resistant glacial landscape. The glacier …

  • The Infrastructure of Ice: Mapping the Fedchenko Glacier

    Open Access•Stewart Weaver, Tatyana Bakhmetyeva•ARTICLE•Roadsides•2026

In 1928, surveyors attached to a joint German-Soviet expedition to the Pamir Mountains produced the first detailed scientific map of the Fedchenko Glacier, the largest non-polar glacier in the world. Tatyana Bakhmetyeva•ARTICLE•Diplomatica•2022

Analyzing several documentary films and other sources through the lens of gender and feminist theory, this article explores the role of hunting and nature in Soviet diplomatic relationships. The article views diplomacy as a masculine space in which diplomatic negotiations relied on successful displays of toughness and the exhibition of prowess and agility. These skills were best demonstrated not in the official corridors of power but in settings …

Stewart Weaver, Tatyana Bakhmetyeva et al.•ARTICLE•The Oral History Review•2022

On August 5, 2010, a violent cloudburst dumped fourteen inches of rain on Ladakh, a mountain desert region in the far north of India accustomed to getting just three inches of rain in a year. Five years later, flooding recurred on a wider scale, destroying buildings, roads, fields, and orchards all over Ladakh and provoking a wide-ranging discussion among locals about the causes of climate catastrophe. In this essay, we attend to those local voic…
