The Moratorium Debate in the Anglican Church of Uganda
In 1971, John Gatu called for a moratorium on missionary funds and personnel from Europe and North America. This call stirred a debate among Christian churches and organizations in Africa and beyond. The moratorium received positive and negative responses. Two leaders of the Church of Uganda responded to the moratorium. After 50 years of the discussion of Gatu's call for a moratorium, the Church of Uganda has developed and yet she has other issue…
Mobility and life satisfaction among wheelchair users
This study explored the association between mobilities and life satisfaction among wheelchair users. Mobilities encompass not only spatial mobility but also motility. Offline and online questionnaires were administered, and a mobile phone application was used to gather GPS data. Motility was measured in terms of the perceived mobility environment, and spatial mobility was measured by the daily travel distance, the average number of edges in daily…
Mapping Social Distress
Anxiety is a pervasive emotional state that tends to arise in situations involving uncertainty due partly to social and contextual issues including competition, economic disparity, and social insecurity. Thus, distribution of aggregate emotions, such as in anxiety, may reveal an important picture of otherwise invisible social processes in which individuals interact with local and global opportunities, constraints, and potential threats. The aim o…
Socioeconomic status, perceived inequality of opportunity, and attitudes toward redistribution
Previous research suggests that an individual’s socioeconomic status (SES) is negatively associated with attitudes toward redistributive policies. The objective of this study is to examine whether the relationship between an individual’s subjective SES and his or her attitudes toward redistribution is contingent upon perceptions of inequality of opportunity. A series of multilevel analyses was performed using data from 28 countries from the 2009 …
Perceptions of inequality and attitudes towards redistribution in four East Asian welfare states
This study examined the effects of perceived economic inequality and inequality of opportunity on individual preferences for redistributive policies among people in mainland China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Using data from the 2009 International Social Survey Program, a series of regression analyses were performed. Results of the analyses indicate that perceived economic inequality is the most significant predictive factor of attitudes towar…
Running Away from Out‐of‐Home Care
Previous research suggests that the likelihood of runaway episodes among children in out‐of‐home care varies across different communities/regions. However, the potential regional variation has rarely been reflected in attempts to understand runaway episodes in out‐of‐home care systems. The current study examines the effects of child characteristics, family characteristics and child welfare system‐related characteristics on the likelihood of runaw…
Burnout and Turnover Intention Among Social Workers
This study examines the main and interactive effects of role stress, job autonomy, and social support in predicting burnout and turnover intention among social workers. This study included a subsample of 346 social workers identified from a cross-sectional random survey of 1,500 California state-registered social workers. Adjusted for age, gender, organizational tenure, and annual salary, structural equation analyses revealed that role stress had…
Factor Structure and Longitudinal Invariance of the Maslach Burnout Inventory
Objective: The study examined the factorial validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for social work research and practice. Method: Factor structure and longitudinal invariance of the MBI were tested using structural equation modeling techniques with a random sample of 475 state-registered social workers in California. Results: The original three-factor model was superior over other competing factor models. Investigation of the second-orde…
