Field-Driven Best Practices for Conducting Community Needs Assessments in Rural Areas
A three-stage community needs assessment process is the gold standard in conducting community assessments; however, social workers working in rural communities should consider best practices when working in rural areas. Within the community needs assessment literature, there are no rural specific identified best practices to enhance the experiences of social workers and community members engaged in the process. To identify these field driven best…
Landlord Perceptions on Homelessness in Northern Utah
Homeless programs often rely on landlord engagement for successful implementation. However, there is very little research that examines landlord perspectives related to homelessness. Better understanding landlords’ opinions and attitudes regarding those experiencing homelessness can inform program development and policy in the efforts to prevent and mitigate homelessness in the U.S. A 49-question survey was created and administered by social work…
Assessing Organizational Cultural Responsiveness among Refugee-Servicing Domestic Violence Agencies
Refugee community members who have experienced domestic violence in the U.S. face complex challenges in seeking help which may ultimately impact their ability to leave violent relationships. When domestic violence organizations are not prepared to serve them in culturally responsive ways, these challenges are exacerbated. This study surveyed 70 executive directors of domestic violence agencies in U.S. resettlement cities about the extent to which…
Neighborhood bystander intervention in intimate partner abuse
This study examines the relationships among individual beliefs about intimate partner abuse (IPA), attitudes about IPA reporting, social cohesion, and the intention of intervening in neighborhood IPA. Data for this study come from a larger cross‐sectional, community‐based study in which participants ( N = 1,626) were surveyed face to face using stratified random sampling in targeted communities in a Mountain West state (i.e., drop‐off, pick‐up me…

Using Community-Based Research to Improve BSW Students’ Learning in Community Practice
This article describes community–university partnership building, course development/management, and evaluation outcomes related to an intensive community-based research project that was integrated in two sections of an undergraduate course on community practice. Pre- and posttest data were collected from 60 BSW students who were enrolled in community practice and who participated in a community-based research project with their state’s fair hous…
Social Service Workers’ Knowledge of and Attitudes Toward Fair Housing Laws
The purpose of this study was to explore social service workers’ awareness, knowledge, and attitudes about fair housing in Utah. Using a fair housing awareness scale, a fair housing knowledge scale, a fair housing attitude scale, and fair housing vignettes, 195 social service workers were surveyed in Utah. Descriptive results demonstrated that although social service workers knew about fair housing laws, they did not know whom to contact for fair…
Adolescent neighborhood context and young adult economic outcomes for low-income African Americans and Latinos
We quantify how young adult employment and educational outcomes for low-income African Americans and Latinos relate to their adolescent neighborhood conditions. Data come from surveys of Denver Housing Authority (DHA) households who lived in public housing scattered throughout Denver County. Because DHA allocations mimic random assignment to neighborhood, this program represents a natural experiment for overcoming geographic selection bias. We us…
Employment of Low-Income African American and Latino Teens
We quantify how teen employment outcomes for low-income African Americans and Latinos relate to their neighborhood conditions during ages 14-17. Data come from surveys of Denver Housing Authority (DHA) households who have lived in public housing scattered throughout Denver County. Because DHA household allocation mimics random assignment to neighborhood, this program represents a natural experiment for overcoming geographic selection bias. Our lo…
Adrift at the Margins of Urban Society
We quantify how social detachment (measured as neither working nor attending school) of low-income African-American and Latino young adults relates to their teen neighborhood conditions. Data come from retrospective surveys of Denver Housing Authority (DHA) households. Because DHA household allocation mimics quasirandom assignment to neighborhoods throughout Denver County, this program represents a natural experiment for overcoming geographic sel…
Exploring Gender Differences
This qualitative study explored gender differences in socially interactive technology (SIT) use/abuse among dating teens from Michigan ( N = 23). Focus group transcripts were coded using three categories: (1) type of SIT (e.g., social networking); (2) abusive action (e.g., monitoring); and (3) consequence (e.g., jealousy). Texting and social networking were the most commonly used types of SIT. Spying/monitoring, sexting, and password sharing/acco…
