Colonial Business in Postcolonial Germany: The Imperial Afterlives of C. Woermann, 1919–1945
Situating itself at the intersection of colonial history, global history and business history, this article highlights the overlooked history of German colonial companies post-First World War. It argues for an ‘imperial afterlife’ through continued German corporate interests in African markets, emphasising the economic dimension of imperialism. Using C. Woermann as an example, it shows how the company adapted to the post-First World War global or…

(Post-)Colonial Business History and the Coloniality of the Firm: The Case of the Woermann Group, 1884–1945
By providing a working definition of an expatriate colonial business, this article examines the role of the Woermann group's integration into and support of colonialism through trade, plantations, and logistics. Focusing on its activities in Cameroon and the pivotal role of the Woermann Linie during the Herero and Nama genocide in German South West Africa, it illustrates the company's entanglement with German colonial rule. Even after the end of …
France and Germany in the South China Sea, c. 1840–1930: Maritime Competition and Imperial Power
Interest in maritime history as a topic of global history studies has continued unabated for several years. This (re)discovery of the seas by historians as spaces of interaction in an increasingly interconnected world can be explained by the rise of global history on the one hand and the continuing importance of maritime globalization processes on the other: shipping is still the backbone of economic globalization. As the United Nations review of…
