The role of executive functioning in smoking cessation
Profile of Executive Functioning and Lifetime History of Acquired Brain Injury in Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness
(1) Background: Housing instability is a public health issue in both developed and developing countries. This exploratory pilot study examines executive functioning (EF) and the history of acquired brain injury (ABI) in youth and young adults experiencing homelessness (YYEH). (2) Methods: Twenty-three YYEH (ages 18-25; 48% male) were recruited from a drop-in center in Central Ohio. The Ohio State University TBI Identification Method (OSU TBI-ID+A…
Service Accessibility
Purpose Immigrant women of color (IWOC) experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) face unique barriers in reporting and accessing resources. Service providers (SP)s are the critical entry point for IPV-related services, but little research has examined their perspectives on providing equitable trauma-informed services. This study aims to examine the perspectives of SP from both formal or domestic violence (DV) designated agencies and informal …
A Randomized Clinical Trial of a Quitline Vaping Cessation Intervention
Despite interest in quitting vaping among young adults (YAs), little is known about characteristics of e-cigarette (EC) users seeking treatment. In this study, YAs aged 18-24 living in the United States interested in vaping cessation treatment were recruited to complete an online survey regarding demographics and EC use. Primary eligibility criteria were EC use on at least 20 days per month (no other tobacco use), and interest in quitting in the …
Important Considerations for Research on Intimate Partner Violence-Related Brain Injury from the Enigma Consortium IPV Working Group
How Advocates Use Care to Accommodate the Needs of Domestic Violence Survivors Seeking Services With Brain Injuries and Mental Health Challenges
We evaluated the implementation of Connect, Acknowledge, Respond, and Evaluate (CARE), an organization-level intervention, to accommodate the health needs of survivors, including brain injury. Participants were staff or administrators at agencies serving domestic violence (DV) survivors ( n = 57 advocates; n = 5 agencies). Process evaluation focus groups ( n = 10 groups) were conducted. Two researchers coded/analyzed focus group transcripts using…
Support Services for Immigrant and Refugee Women of Color Domestic Violence Survivors
This qualitative study examined the knowledge, experiences, and perceptions about support services for adolescent girls and adult refugee women (RW) survivors of domestic violence (DV) from five countries (Bhutan, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Somalia) who were residing in a large city in midwestern state in the United States (U.S.). The qualitative interviews (N = 35) were analyzed, revealing shared perspectives among partic…
The Role of Cigarillo Flavor in the Co-Use of Cigarillos and Cannabis among Young Adults
Background: Research suggests flavor facilitates cigarillo use, but it is unknown if flavor impacts patterns of co-use of cigarillos and cannabis (“co-use”), which is common among young adult smokers. This study’s aim was to determine the role of the cigarillo flavor in co-use among young adults. Methods: Data were collected (2020-2021) in a cross-sectional online survey administered to young adults who smoked ≥2 cigarillos/week (N = 361), recrui…
Brain Injury Is Prevalent and Precedes Tobacco Use among Youth and Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness
70%+ of youth and young adults experiencing homelessness (YYEH; 14-24 years old) smoke combustible tobacco. Little is known about the prevalence of acquired brain injury (ABI) among youth and young adult smokers experiencing homelessness (YYSEH) and its impact on tobacco use progression-the aim of our study. Through an interviewer-administered survey, YYSEH were asked about timing of tobacco use; exposure to causes of ABI; including brain oxygen …
Cigarillo Flavor and Motivation to Quit among Co-Users of Cigarillos and Cannabis
Flavored cigar restrictions have the potential to benefit public health. Flavor availability facilitates cigarillo use, but it is unknown if flavor impacts patterns of co-use of cigarillos and cannabis, an increasingly prevalent behavior among young adults. Data were collected (2020-2021) in a cross-sectional online survey administered to a convenience sample of young adults who smoked cigarillos from 15 areas with high cigar use prevalence. We a…
Characterizing tobacco and marijuana use among youth combustible tobacco users experiencing homelessness – considering product type, brand, flavor, frequency, and higher-risk use patterns and predicto…
Young combustible tobacco users experiencing homelessness engage in high-risk use patterns, including poly-tobacco use, co-use of tobacco with marijuana, and frequent combustible product use. Interventions that consider the full context of tobacco and marijuana use are needed to support smoking cessation in this population
The Type and Timing of Child Maltreatment as Predictors of Adolescent Cigarette Smoking Trajectories
Background: There is limited research examining the association between child maltreatment and cigarette smoking as a specific type of adolescent substance use, and research examining high-risk samples and variations based on maltreatment type and timing remain sparse. Objectives: The primary aim of the study was to examine the relationship between child maltreatment and cigarette smoking trajectories. Methods: Latent class growth analysis and mu…

Address‐Based Sampling for Recruiting Rural Subpopulations
PURPOSE: This article describes recruitment of a subpopulation of women in a rural area, extending an existing method of a 2-phase address-based sampling protocol to include a mixed-mode approach. METHODS: Phase 1 included a household enumeration questionnaire mailed to randomly selected households (n = 1,950) in 3 Ohio Appalachian counties to identify members of the eligible subgroup. The second phase of recruitment involved contacting 1 randoml…
Social Networks and Smoking in Rural Women
Differences existed in characteristics of time versus advice egocentric networks. Smoking status was associated with these differences. Results will assist with future development of a network-based smoking cessation intervention
History of dating violence and the association with late adolescent health
For females, more pronounced adverse health was observed for those exposed to physical/sexual versus non-physical dating violence. For both females and males, non-physical dating violence victimization contributed to poor health
Dating violence victimization across the teen years
Our study adds information to a substantial, but still growing, body of literature about dating violence frequency, age of occurrence, and number of abusive partners among adolescents
Adolescent and adult perceptions of traditional and novel smokeless tobacco products and packaging in rural Ohio
Packaging has a significant role in shaping perceptions of ST and consumer behaviour. Regulation of product packaging such as shape, size and images should be part of comprehensive tobacco control
