Perceptions of Crime Threat and Criminal Justice Institutions
Despite the importance of perceptions of crime threat and criminal justice institutions in the study of public punitiveness, less is known how they collectively impact capital jurors’ sentencing decisions. Using a vignette survey experiment, this study examined how these perceptions can shape mock jurors’ sentencing decisions in a capital trial. Death-qualified participants ( N = 744) from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk recommended a punishment for the…
Examining the Links Between Procedural Justice, Bounded Authority, and Legitimacy in Video-Recorded Police Encounters
We examine how individual perceptions of procedural justice and bounded authority are related to evaluations of video-recorded police encounters. We also assess whether pre-existing perceptions of police legitimacy are related to these evaluations. A sample of 830 adults, recruited via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, evaluated a staged routine traffic stop. People who perceived higher procedural justice and bounded authority in the officer’s behavior w…
Fear of Crime Among Adolescents Experiencing Hate-Related Victimization in Schools
Although procedural justice is an important factor shaping individuals’ perceptions of crime and safety, its role in school settings remains understudied. Using the 2022 NCVS School Crime Supplement, this study examined whether perceived procedural justice in school practices buffers adolescents from the negative consequences of hate-related victimization focusing on fear of crime. Students who experienced hate-related victimization at school rep…
Effects of Question Methods in Assessing Fear of Hate Crimes
This study examined episodic measures that assess frequency and magnitude of perceived threat of hate crime over the last six months compared to standard methods that address diffuse threat. Framing effects of question wording, worry - versus fear - versus safety -based, were also assessed. Using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, a sample of 1,824 adults vulnerable to hate crime completed one of the three randomly assigned survey questionnaires that vari…
Disability, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation
The current study examines the intersections between disability, gender identity, and sexual orientation in relation to the perceived threat of hate crimes against these identities. Results based on a purposive sample of 1824 adults recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk show that persons with a disability perceive greater threat of hate crimes. When considering disability with gender identity and sexual orientation, perceived threat is exacerba…
Extending the Shadow of Sexual Assault Hypothesis
Women’s fear has been explained as rooted in fears of sexual assault—a phenomenon known as the shadow of sexual assault hypothesis. The current study extends this hypothesis to examine whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons’ fear of hate crimes is shadowed by fears of sexual assault. Results indicate that bisexual and transgender persons express greater fear of hate crimes relative to others. This fear is explained by their fear …
Co-Production of Research Methods Knowledge in Criminology and Criminal Justice
Co-production is the involvement of citizens in the production of public services. In education, this involves students working with instructors to jointly produce the knowledge that stems from the education process. This paper describes our approach to co-production of knowledge through a semester’s undergraduate courses on research methods in criminology/criminal justice. Our co-production efforts involved: (a) Instructors provided initial inst…
Confidence in criminal justice and judgments of guilt in criminal trials
An experiment was conducted to examine how mock jurors’ verdict judgments on a criminal case can be predicted by their confidence in criminal justice. Results based on a sample of 433 adults indicate that individuals with higher confidence in criminal justice authorities’ speedy resolutions of criminal cases and in accurate fact-finding were more likely to decide a guilty verdict. In contrast, individuals with higher confidence in authorities’ la…
Cognitive Effects of Inattentive Responding in an MTurk Sample
Objective Mechanical Turk (MTurk) has become an increasingly valuable sampling tool for social scientists. At the same time, concern has emerged about the quality of responses obtained from MTurk workers. This article demonstrates several screening practices for identifying problematic or inattentive MTurk participants. The study also examines how inattentive responding affects psychometric properties of measures and relationships between substan…
