Discrepancies in Perceived Risk of Sexual Victimization for Self and Others: The Roles of Perpetrator Closeness and Past Victimization
Women are more likely to be raped by an acquaintance than a stranger but are more fearful of stranger rape. We apply the concept of unique invulnerability to explain this paradox. Results indicate that women are aware of the greater risk of acquaintance rape for the general population, but believe that they, and their close friends, are less vulnerable to this threat. However, this perceived invulnerability was reduced among women who had previou…

Effects of Intimate Partner Violence-Related Strangulation on Women Who Report a Disability and Received Forensic Nursing Services
Data on effects of strangulation in victims with a disability are lacking despite this population experiencing intimate partner violence at higher rates than women without a disability. A retrospective review was conducted on medical records of patients seeking care at a community-based, forensic nurse examiner program following an intimate partner violence-related strangulation event. The presence of disability was not associated with difference…

True Crime Consumption as Defensive Vigilance: Psychological Mechanisms of a Rape Avoidance System
Fear the unseen: Supernatural belief and agency detection in virtual reality
Belief in supernatural agents is ubiquitous, as evidenced by its prevalence in religion, folklore, and cultural practices. It is theorized that, given recurrent ancestral risks of predation and frequent contact with other dangerous agents, mechanisms for agency detection may have evolved and play an important role in facilitating belief in supernatural agents. Thus, agency detection and belief in supernatural agents may be correlated in modern po…

Is ostracism a strong situation? The influence of personality in reactions to rejection
Virtual morality: Emotion and action in a simulated three-dimensional “trolley problem”
Experimentally investigating the relationship between moral judgment and action is difficult when the action of interest entails harming others. We adopt a new approach to this problem by placing subjects in an immersive, virtual reality environment that simulates the classic "trolley problem." In this moral dilemma, the majority of research participants behaved as "moral utilitarians," either (a) acting to cause the death of one individual in or…
Fertility and race perception predict voter preference for Barack Obama
Prejudice at the nexus of race and gender: An outgroup male target hypothesis
Adopting an evolutionary approach to the psychology of race bias, we posit that intergroup conflict perpetrated by male aggressors throughout human evolutionary history has shaped the psychology of modern forms of intergroup bias and that this psychology reflects the unique adaptive problems that differ between men and women in coping with male aggressors from groups other than one's own. Here we report results across 4 studies consistent with th…
