Memory, Slavery and Muslim Citizenship in the post-Emancipation circum-Saharan World
Rethinking the Place of Timbuktu in the Intellectual History of Muslim West Africa
Timbuktu: What Call to Action
This article is the product of a collaboration between a scholar of West African cinema (Fofana) and a historian of northern Mali (Hall), who together offer an interpretation of the politics of Abderrahmane Sissako's film Timbuktu (2014). This film is about the Islamist jihadist occupation of the Malian town of Timbuktu in 2012–13, and it succeeds in demonstrating some of the ways that the jihadist project tried to reorganize the lives of people …

Saharan Commerce and Islamic Law: The Question of Usury ( ribā ) in the Nawāzil Literature of Mali And Mauritania, 1700-1929
From the earliest days of the formation of Islamic law, commerce with sub-Saharan Africa—the land of the blacks—was deemed an undesirable undertaking from a moral point of view. For example, in his foundational Maliki textbook known simply as the Risāla, the tenth-century North African scholar
Arguing sovereignty in Songhay
Recent archaeological, historical, and anthropological literature on the development of social and political complexity in Africa challenges older models of state formation that used to shape the understanding of medieval Sahelian empires, such as Songhay. As we now know, there were multiple paths to complexity that did not necessarily lead to state formation; and there was a heterarchical distribution of power in many African political formation…
One hippopotamus and eight blind analysts: A multivocal analysis of the 2012 political crisis in the divided Republic of Mali
This is an exercise in contemporary history that aims to give a comprehensive background and analysis to the current (2012) political crisis in Mali, generated by the start of a new Tuareg nationalist uprising against the state, complemented by a coordinated attack on the state by both international (AQIM) and local Jihadi-Salafi movements, leading to a coup d'état against the incumbent President Touré, and finallly a political stalemate of great…
The Arabic Letters of Ghadames Slaves in the Niger Bend, 1860–1900
A History of Race in Muslim West Africa, 1600–1960
The mobilization of local ideas about racial difference has been important in generating, and intensifying, civil wars that have occurred since the end of colonial rule in all of the countries that straddle the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. From Sudan to Mauritania, the racial categories deployed in contemporary conflicts often hearken back to an older history in which blackness could be equated with slavery and non-blackness with predatory…
How Slaves Used Islam: The Letters of Enslaved Muslim Commercial Agents in the Nineteenth-Century Niger Bend and Central Sahara
Historians of slavery in Africa have long struggled to recover the voices of enslaved people. In this article, an unusual set of sources found in Timbuktu (Mali) reveals the existence of a stratum of literate, Muslim slaves who wrote and received letters written in Arabic. These letters make it possible to probe the Islamic rhetoric used by Muslim slaves and ask how enslaved people who adopted Islam understood their faith. Did Muslim slaves arriv…

The question of 'race' in the pre-colonial southern Sahara
One of the principle issues that divide people in the southern margins of the Sahara Desert is the issue of 'race.' Each of the countries that share this region, from Mauritania to Sudan, has experienced civil violence with racial overtones since achieving independence from colonial rule in the 1950s and 1960s. Today's crisis in Western Sudan is only the latest example. However, very little academic attention has been paid to the issue of 'race' …

Theatre of Fire: Special Effects in the Early English and Scottish Theatre (review)
In February 1613, the Master Gunner of England entertained King James and the royal party with "many skilful and ingenious arrangements with great bumbards, shooting up many artificial balls of fire into the ayre [which fell into] many diverse streams like rainebowes." There followed a masque in which "Lady Lucida, queen of the man-hating Amazones" was pursued and captured by the love-struck "Mango the Tartarian Magician." Lucida was later rescue…

494 Book Reviews TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE remark that I do not think that the Latin word cochlea can mean anything except a snail, a screw, or a spiral staircase. Finally, there is the description of the onager from Ammianus. There is a Latin text and no diagrams, and to me it seems quite plain. It consists of two slightly curved beams of oak or holmoak put together in a square frame and held together by ropes going through holes. The sinew bundle …
