Unequal contributions to CO2 emissions along the income distribution within and between countries
Verosimiglianza storica vs memoria creativa in El prodigioso príncipe transilvano
"In the Spanish theatre of the Golden Age, political propaganda and the consequent need to propose heroes conforming to the prevailing political-religious ideology to the public of corrales de comedia were almost always conditioning the creative process. This is also the case of El prodigioso príncipe transilvano, a historical comedy set at the time of the long Spanish-Turkish conflict (1526-1606) and dedicated to exalting the figure of Sigismund…
Investigating the origins of differentiated vulnerabilities to climate change through the lenses of the Capability Approach
The paper traces the evolution the concept of socioeconomic vulnerability to climate change has followed in the academic and scientific debate and examines its effects on wellbeing. The recent recognition of vulnerability as a social construction has shifted the focus of the analysis to the dimension of adaptive capacity, restoring a political economy significance to the study of vulnerability. The social origin of vulnerability is related to the…
Climate change and armed conflicts in Africa
The paper focuses on the nexus between climate change and armed conflicts with an empirical analysis based on a panel of 2653 georeferenced cells for the African continent between 1990 and 2016. Our econometric approach addresses unobservable heterogeneity in predicting the probability of violent events and the persistency of conflicting behaviour over time. The proposed strategy also accounts for both changes in climatic conditions and spatial d…

The trap of climate change-induced “natural” disasters and inequality
The purpose of the present paper is to disentangle the mechanisms that connect climate change-induced disasters, inequality and vulnerability by accounting for both directions of causality. We do so by means of a simultaneous equations approach on a panel of 149 countries from 1992 to 2018. The empirical analysis reveals that countries with higher levels of income inequality suffer greater damages when hit by a natural disaster. At the same time,…
Institutional fragmentation and urbanization in European Union cities
The relationship between institutional fragmentation and the spatial extent of cities in Europe’s functional urban areas is examined. European Union planning regulations vary across member states, but in most cases local authorities determine land use within the more general regulatory frameworks set by national or subnational authorities. More decentralized and fragmented settings may favour urban sprawl, allowing developers to avoid land-use re…
