  • Richard Wagner and the German Nation

    Open Access•T C W Blanning, Tim Blanning•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•2015•References: 1

Richard Wagner's relationship with the German nation was inconsistent and often contradictory, veering between pride and distaste. One constant feature, however, was his intense hostility to the German princes. He held them responsible for the decline of German culture after the Reformation and, more especially, after the Thirty Years War. Their imitation of Italian and French models amounted to cultural treason in his view. The great revival of …

  • The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation past and present: The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation past and present

    Open Access•T C W Blanning, Tim Blanning•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2012•Cited by: 2

In the course of the past fifty years there has been a thorough-going reappraisal of the Holy Roman Empire, so long the target of derision or victim of neglect. Virtually every aspect of its history between the peace of Westphalia in 1648 and its final demise in 1806 has been revised. The Empire is now lauded for being a constitutional state based on the rule of law, which succeeded in protecting German liberties and asserting German nationality.…

  • The Bee and the Eagle: Napoleonic France and the End of the Holy Roman Empire, 1806

    T C W Blanning, T Blanning•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2010•Cited by: 1

This interesting but uneven collection gets off to a shaky start when the editors tell us that the Emperor Francis II was the brother of his predecessor Leopold II and of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. He was, of course, the son of the former and the nephew of the latter. This slip can be taken as symptomatic of a more general neglect of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Holy Roman Empire in the period. One cannot imagine the same sort of mistake …

  • Die imaginierte Restauration: Reprasentation der Monarchie im Frankreich Ludwigs XVIII

    T C W Blanning, T Blanning•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2008

How to legitimate the monarchy in Restoration France is the subject of this imaginative and stimulating dissertation. As the Bourbons were soon on their travels again, it would seem that they really had learned nothing from twenty-five years of exile. Yet, in their fumbling way, they did show some awareness of the need for a new semiotic agenda. When the comte d’Artois entered Paris in the wake of the allied armies on 14 April 1814, he wore the p…

  • Painterly Enlightenment: The Art of Franz Anton Maulbertsch, 1724 1796

    T C W Blanning, T Blanning•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2007

In 1995 Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann published an illuminating (and lavishly illustrated) study of the art and culture of Central Europe entitled Court, Cloister and City (rev. ante, cxiii [1998], 996–7). Among the lesser known artists he disinterred on that occasion was Franz Anton Maulbertsch, to whom he returns in this short but closely argued book. It started out as the Rand Lectures at the University of North Carolina, which helps to explain the …

    T C W Blanning•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2006

Vier Monarchien—Vier Öffentlichkeiten: Kommunikation um die Schlacht bei Dettingen, by Sebastian Küster (Münster: LIT Verlag, 2004; pp. 556. Eur 45.90). There is an excellent idea underpinning this substantial volume. Sebastian Küster has taken one major military incident from the middle of the eighteenth century and has tested the response in four monarchies—England, Hanover, France and the Habsburg Monarchy—in an attempt to understand better th…

Historians of Germany in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have always been spoilt for choice when needing to recommend a good general account of their period. Until recently, their colleagues working on the eighteenth century and the revolutionary-Napoleonic period have been less fortunate. The second volume of Hajo Holborn's A History of Modern Germany contains much that is original, penetrating, and powerful but is also decidedly uneven i…
