  • Richard Hooker and Reformed Orthodoxy

Rudolph Almasy, Luca Baschera et al.•BOOK•Richard Hooker and Reformed…•2017

  • Descartes, Cartesianism, and Early Modern Theology

Aza Goudriaan, Ulrich L Lehner et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2016

While insisting on the need to separate theology from philosophy, Descartes developed a philosophical theology that was intensely debated in the early modern period. This article asks the question how the receptions of Cartesian philosophy were related to different confessional profiles. Confessional controversies certainly played a role: some feared that Cartesian philosophy was inspired by Jesuits, while others accused it of supporting Calvinis…

  • God, Creation, and Providence in Post-Reformation Reformed Theology

Andreas J Beck, Ulrich L Lehner et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2016

This essay discusses the interrelated loci of God, creation, and providence in post-Reformation Reformed theology, focusing primarily on the Leiden Synopsis and the works of Gisbertus Voetius, Melchior Leydecker, Petrus van Mastricht, and Francis Turretin. The doctrine of God is about the triune God and his eternal, immanent acts or works, whether direct to God himself or ad extra , whereas the doctrines of creation and providence concern externa…

  • Mysticism and Reform in Catholic Theology between 1600 and 1800

    William P O'Brien, William P O’Brien et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2016

These introductory remarks focus on themes not covered in the handbook—the Council of Trent’s focus on a universal call to holiness, the effect of parish missions on popular faith, and practical reforms such as the founding of seminaries and improving the moral life of the clergy. Moreover, Trent’s support for positive theology is outlined, as well as Catholic attempts to defend traditional Trinitarian theology against the anti-Trinitarianism tha…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern Theology, 1600-1800

Ulrich L Lehner, Richard A Muller et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2016

This Handbook offers a comprehensive and reliable introduction to Christian theological literature originating in Western Europe, from roughly the end of the French Wars of Religion (1598) to the Congress of Vienna (1815). Approaching from various angles theology from Bossuet to Jonathan Edwards, the volume will review the major forms of early modern theology (scholastic, including Cartesian scholasticism; Enlightenment; early Romanticism, etc.);…

    A G Roeber, Richard A Muller et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2016

The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern Theology, 1600-1800 will offer a comprehensive and reliable introduction to Christian theological literature originating in Western Europe from, roughly, the end of the French Wars of Religion (1598) to the Congress of Vienna (1815). Using a variety of approaches, the contributors examine theology spanning from Bossuet to Jonathan Edwards. They review the major forms of early modern theology, such as Cartesian …

  • Air Pollution in China: Mapping of Concentrations and Sources

    Open Access•Robert A Rohde, Robert Rohde et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2015

China has recently made available hourly air pollution data from over 1500 sites, including airborne particulate matter (PM), SO2, NO2, and O3. We apply Kriging interpolation to four months of data to derive pollution maps for eastern China. Consistent with prior findings, the greatest pollution occurs in the east, but significant levels are widespread across northern and central China and are not limited to major cities or geologic basins. Sourc…

  • Christ, Predestination, and Covenant in Post-Reformation Reformed Theology

Willem J van Asselt, Ulrich L Lehner et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2014•Cited by: 1

In this essay the closely interconnected themes of Christology, predestination and covenant in post-Reformation Reformed theology are discussed. Because of the huge amount of material in this field, it is limited to a discussion of some representative issues, and for this purpose a select group of representative theologians (J. H. Heidegger, J. Maccovius and J. Cocceius). It analyzes in some detail their views on Christology, predestination and c…

  • Not Scotist: Understandings of being, univocity, and analogy in early-modern Reformed thought

    Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Reformation & Renaissance Review•2012

Several lines of recent scholarship have identified developing Protestant thought as Scotist and, specifically, have contended a dominance of the Scotist concept of the univocity of being in early modern Protestantism. The present essay examines early-modern Reformed metaphysics and theology and demonstrates that the contention is unfounded. Rather, the more typical approach to the language of being and related issues of predication concerning Go…

  • The “Reception of Calvin” in Later Reformed Theology: Concluding Thoughts

    Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2011

The following essay surveys and reflects on the conference as a whole. It identifies a series of significant developments in the study of later Reformed thought, notably a series of ways in which scholarship has moved beyond the dead-ends of older approaches such as the notorious “Calvin against the Calvinists” school of thought. Among other points, the issue of continuity and discontinuity in the history of Protestant thought has received consid…

  • Submarines, Quarks, and Radioisotope Dating

    Open Access•Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 8

My path to the invention of accelerator mass spectrometry—now just called AMS—was quirky and extraordinary, and it is a saga worth telling, particularly for young people who may have an oversimplified image of how progress in science is actually made. It was an adventurous journey, and like many adventures, it was often uncomfortable, haphazard, and frequently characterized by a feeling of being lost. In retrospect, the only reason I set out on t…

  • John Calvin and later Calvinism: The identity of the Reformed tradition

    Open Access•Richard A Muller•CHAPTER•The Cambridge companion to…•2004

Between the middle of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth, the Reformed theology of John Calvin and several of his predecessors and contemporaries developed into a significant international movement that has come to be known as 'Calvinism'. As is typically the case in history, the movement was named, not by its proponents, but by its detractors, who took the name of its most famous leader as the basis for a label. The movem…

  • The Cambridge Companion to Reformation Theology

    Open Access•David V N Bagchi, Denis R Janz et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge companion to…•2004

The European Reformation of the sixteenth century was one of the most formative periods in the history of Christian thought and remains one of the most fascinating events in Western history. The Cambridge Companion to Reformation Theology provides a comprehensive guide to the theology and theologians of the Reformation period. Each of the eighteen chapters is written by a leading authority in the field and provides an up-to-date account and analy…

  • After Calvin: Studies in the Development of a Theological Tradition (Oxford Studies in Historical Theology)

    Richard A Muller•BOOK•After Calvin•2003

In this sequel to Muller's 'The Unaccommodated Calvin' (OUP 2000), the author carries his approach forward, with the goal of overcoming a series of 19th- and 20th-century theological frameworks characteristic of much of the scholarship on Reformed orthodoxy, or 'Calvinism after Calvin'.

  • The Debate over the Vowel Points and the Crisis in Orthodox Hermeneutics

    Richard A Muller•CHAPTER•After Calvin•2003

This chapter examines the materials of a famous but little-examined and misunderstood 17th-century debate over the text of the Scripture. At least one modern debate pits an obscurantist scholastic defense of the Mosaic origins of the vowel points against the more well-known views of the Reformation and the forward march of the exegesis. However, one of the foremost Judaic scholars of the era, John Lightfoot, remembered for arguing for the use of …

  • The Unaccommodated Calvin: Studies in the Foundation of a Theological Tradition

    Open Access•Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Pro Ecclesia A Journal of…•2002

This book attempts to understand Calvin in his sixteenth-century context, with attention to continuities and discontinuities between his thought and that of his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. Richard Muller is particularly interested in the interplay between theological and philosophical themes common to Calvin and the medieval doctors, and in developments in rhetoric and method associated with humanism. He shows that Calvin's theo…

  • Reformation, Orthodoxy, "Christian Aristotelianism," and the Eclecticism of Early Modern Philosophy

    Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Nederlands Archief voor…•2001

A large number of studies of the Reformation have emphasized the antagonism of the Reformers toward philosophy, specifically toward Aristotelian philosophy. One recent and wildly hyperbolic essay has even suggested that the fundamental message of the Reformation was the rejection of Aristotle and that any return to Aristotelian thinking after a brief nearly non-Aristotelian moment in the early thought of Luther amounts to a loss of the meaning of…

  • Scholasticism in Calvin: A Question of Relation and Disjunction

    Richard A Muller•CHAPTER•The unaccommodated Calvin•2000

The name of John Calvin and the term “scholasticism” have seldom been stated positively in the same breath. The reasons for assuming a profoundly negative relationship between Calvin and the scholastic doctors of the Middle Ages literally abound on the pages of Calvin’s Institutes, in the form of his running diatribe against the “schoolmen.” Nonetheless, Calvin’s theology—whether from the perspective of its methods or from the perspective of its …

  • The Life and Thought of John Gill (1697-1771): A Tercentennial Appreciation

Robert Oliver, Richard A Muller et al.•BOOK•The Life and Thought of John Gill…•1997

This volume of essays focuses on the thought of John Gill, the doyen of High Calvinism in the transatlantic Baptist community of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Among the topics covered are Gill's trinitarian theology, his soteriological views, his Baptist ecclesiology, and his use of Scripture. Other papers are more focused, examining, for instance, his clash with the Arminian Methodist leader John Wesley over the issues of predes…

    Open Access•Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1981

In his important Christological study, The Crucified God , Jürgen Moltmann addresses the problem of the ultimate relation Christ to believers, using as the focus of his analysis Calvin's exegesis of 1 Cor 15:24–28. Moltmann argues that this locus classicus of Pauline subordinationism— “Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father ... then shall the Son also himself be subject”—marks the point in Calvin'…

    Open Access•Richard A Muller•ARTICLE•Church History•1986•References: 6

During the past two decades scholars have become more appreciatively aware of the medieval scholastic roots of Protestantism and have begun to gain some appreciation, albeit halting, of the scholastic form of Protestantism which dominated the Protestant universities in the seventeenth century. This awareness implies, in the first place, a development beyond the thesis advanced by Lortz and Bouyer that Protestantism was the effect of the decadent …
