Definitions of Ethnicity in Communication Scholarship
To discover how ethnicity is defined in communication scholarship, we analyzed the definitions of ethnicity employed in articles published in communication journals between 2000 and 2016. Our results indicate that almost all such studies (94%) contained operational definitions; however, far fewer (approximately 14%) contained theoretical definitions of ethnicity. Theoretical definitions describe the phenomenon under study in abstract terms or in …
Who is Credible (and Where)? Using Virtual Reality to Examine Credibility and Bias of Perceived Race/Ethnicity in Urban/Suburban Environments
This study evaluates perceptions of race/ethnicity in connection to geography of urban/suburban neighborhoods. Results indicated that perceptions of geography…

Using principles of Cultural Fusion Theory (Croucher & Kramer, 2017), this study focuses on representations of Syrian refugees in mainstream Turkish newspapers to determine: (a) how the host culture media portrays newcomers; and (b) what the implications of these portrayals are in terms of an effective cultural fusion between the two communities. The study entailed content analysis of five Turkish newspapers. A keyword search of the words Syrian …

This article explores self-defined boundaries of ethnic identity by framing ethnicity as a communicative process through a narrative study focusing on a particular refugee group called Meskhetian Turks. Twelve in-depth interviews were analyzed for emerging themes. The results revealed three inter-connected themes demonstrating the significance of (1) the past, (2) c…

"This book is a production of the discipline of intercultural communication aiming to bridge intercultural communication research with the emerging new media studies. It facilitates comprehensive analysis, providing the necessary power to research the relationships between culture and new media through a positive, effective, and transformational analysis that brings both fields together"
Secondary Cultures and Their Impact as Intermediaries on Refugee Adaptation to Host Cultures
This is a qualitative study examining aspects of refugee adaptation. As refugees negotiate an adaptation process into their host cultures, secondary communities, those who possess certain commonalities and similarities with the newcomers, often act as intermediaries between the refugee groups and host cultures. This article aims to answer the question: how does a refugee group’s extended community of an intermediary group influence the group’s ad…
