  • Examining a Sample of Black Deaf Individuals on the Deaf Acculturation Scale

S S Nelson Schmitt, Stephan Schmitt et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2015

The current study sought to identify and analyze how Black deaf and hard-of-hearing people conceptualize their deaf and hard-of-hearing identities. That is, what cultural and linguistic factors are involved and how do they interact? An existing measure of Deaf cultural identity, the Deaf Acculturation Scale (DAS), was used to evaluate these questions. Review of the measure's normative sample (n = 3,070) indicated that fewer than 300 self-identifi…

It has been estimated that roughly 25% of all Deaf women in the United States are victims of intimate partner violence (Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services [ADWAS]), a figure similar to annual prevalence rates of 16% to 30% for intimate partners in the general population. Irene W Leigh, Deborah Maxwell-McCaw et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2008

The number of children who have received cochlear implants (CIs) has increased dramatically in the past two decades. In view of potential concerns about their psychosocial adjustment, our aim was to assess the effect of implants on the adolescents' psychosocial functioning among a group of 57 deaf adolescents with and without CIs, using published and validated measures completed by the adolescents themselves, their parents, and teachers. Adolesce…

  • Attachment in Deaf Mothers and Their Children

Irene W Leigh•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2004

In attachment research, there has been a growing interest in how adults conceptualize their relationships with their own parents as well as in the transmission of attachment status from parent to child and the variables that influence that transmission. The primary goal of the present study was to examine the transmission of attachment from deaf mother to child. Adult Attachment Interviews were collected on 32 deaf women and Strange Situation Pro…

  • Parent bonding in clinically depressed deaf and hard-of-hearing adults

I Leigh, Irene W Leigh•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•1999

This study assessed the relationships between parent communication variables and the parent bonding factors of care and overprotection using a sample of 38 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals connected with mental health services who had DSM-III-R or DSM-IV diagnoses of depression-related disorders. The 22 therapists working with these individuals also contributed to data collection. Results based on revised depression (BDI-R) and parent bonding…

  • Empirical paper. Inclusive education and personal development

I Leigh, Irene W Leigh•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•1999

Open-ended questionnaires covering mainstream educational experiences and personal development of deaf and hard-of-hearing adults were analyzed. Half of the 34 deaf and hard-of-hearing respondents altered self-labels based on changes in personal definitions rather than audiological changes. Supportive school environments and coping skills contributed to positive perceptions; nonsupportive school environments and being treated as 'different' were …

  • Deaf/Hearing Cultural Identity Paradigms

Irene W Leigh, Alan L Marcus et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•1998

The Deaf Identity Development Scale (Glickman, 1993) was modified to include hearing individuals and examine how hearing and deaf adults identify themselves. Statistical analysis based on 244 deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing respondents revealed a significant interaction between hearing status of self and parents on the hearing, marginal, and immersion scales of the modified version but not on the bicultural scale. Codas are more marginalized, …
