The Perceived Ability of Gastroenterologists, Hepatologists and Surgeons Can Bias Medical Decision Making
Medical errors are a troubling issue and physicians should be careful to scrutinize their own decisions, remaining open to the possibility that they may be wrong. Even so, doctors may still be overconfident. A survey was here conducted to test how medical experience and self-confidence can affect physicians working in the specific clinical area. Potential participants were contacted through personalized emails and invited to contribute to the sur…
Emotion
Was love invented by European poets in the Middle Ages or is it part of human nature? Will winning the lottery really make you happy? Is it possible to build robots that have feelings? Emotion: A Very Short Introduction explores the latest thinking about emotions, drawing on a wide range of scientific research, from anthropology and psychology to neuroscience and artificial intelligence. It discusses the evolution of emotions and their biological…

What is an emotion?
The word ‘emotion’ is fairly recent. Before the 19th century, people talked instead about ‘passions’, ‘sentiments’, and ‘affections’. ‘What is an emotion?’ begins by outlining the complex history of these words before exploring the variety of emotional experience in different cultures. The Search Hypothesis of Emotion
Many philosophers and psychologists now argue that emotions play a vital role in reasoning. This paper explores one particular way of elucidating how emotions help reason which may be dubbed ‘the search hypothesis of emotion’. After outlining the search hypothesis of emotion and dispensing with a red herring that has marred previous statements of the hypothesis, I discuss two alternative readings of the search hypothesis. It is argued that the se…
What's in a noun? Welsh-, English-, and Spanish- speaking children see it differently
This paper examines young children's abilities to interpret new words as referring to collections. Two experiments examine English-, Spanish-, and Welsh-speaking children's interpretations of novel nouns that could refer either to a single object or to a collection. Experiment 1 tested 53 3- and 4-year-olds; Experiment 2 tested 30 2- to 3-year-olds and 30 4- to 5-year-olds. As early as two years of age, children's responses to new nouns differ ac…
