A Comparison of Non-Adjusted and Bootstrapped Methods: Bootstrapped Diagnosis Might be Worth the Trouble
This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of non-adjusted (Rorer, Hoffman, LaForge, and Hsieh, 1966) and bootstrapped (Rorer and Dawes, 1982) diagnosis using a sample of 1,455 psychiatric inpatients who had completed the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. The usefulness of bootstrapping depended on the criteria for accuracy. Bootstrapping showed no benefit with regard to overall accuracy. Sensitivity increased for five scales upon bootstrapp…
Level of Self-Actualization among Process and Reactive Schizophrenics, Alcoholics, and Normals: A Construct Validity Study of the Personal Orientation Inventory
To extend its validity, the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) was administered to hospitalized patients including 24 classified as Process Schizophrenics, 24 as Reactive Schizophrenics, 22 as Alcoholics, and 24 as Normals (medical patients). Considerable support was found for the predicted order from most to least self-actualized of Normal, Alcoholic, Reactive Schizophrenic, and Process Schizophrenic. Significantly consistent patterns and freq…
Personality Correlates of Coffee Consumption in an Alcoholic Population
The relationship between alcoholics' belief in personal control and attitude toward success and failure
Ethical Risk-Taking among Alcoholics
Tested by the Behavior Prediction Scale, alcoholics were significantly more sensitive to the reinforcement-value-of-censure component of ethical risk-taking, and had greater total risk-taking scores, than control groups
Anxiety and Temporal Perspective among Normals in a Stressful Life Situation
The present study examines relationships between specific types of speech disruption denoting anxiety (the “non-ah” ratio; Mahl, 1959) and tense usage among normal Ss as they experience a real-life stress situation. Major findings are low positive correlations between anxiety and present tense ( r = .38, p < .05) and between anxiety and present plus future tense ( r = .43, p < .05). Since statistical controls (partial correlation) indicate that t…
