  • Relationship of Psychiatric Status to Gulf War Veterans' Health Problems

Jessica Wolfe, Susan P Proctor et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1999

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research has shown that there are important links between certain psychiatric disorders and health symptom reporting. Two disorders in particular (posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression) have been the most widely implicated to date, and this association has sometimes been used to explain the occurrence of ill-defined medical problems and increased somatic symptoms in certain groups, most recently Gu…

  • War‐Zone Trauma and Stress‐Related Symptoms in Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS) Returnees

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Madeline Uddo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1993•References: 32

A growing literature suggests that human beings are often negatively impacted by participation in military combat, but there have been few attempts to document the psychological effects of war stress in the masses of troops deployed to action. We chose to study the relationship of Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS) participation and symptoms of psychological distress in a comparison of 215 Army National Guard and Army Reserve troops who were act…

  • Mmpi Profiles of Veterans of WWII and Korea

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Albert N Allain•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

MMPI profile patterns were compared between combat veteran groups of 168 POW survivors and 67 servicemen who were not war captives in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Results confirm previous reports that the scales, Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy), are characteristically elevated among former POWs. Findings also point to the contribution of scales, Psychasthenia (Pt), Paranoia (Pa), and Ego Strength (Es), in differentiating …

  • Person and Situation Correlates of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Pow Survivors

Patricia B Sutker, Franlynn Bugg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

131 former POWs assigned PTSD diagnoses were distinguished from 62 of their nondiagnosed counterparts by greater stressor severity reflected in measures of confinement weight loss and psychological and biological hardship as well as person characteristics of less socioeconomic advantage and lower military rank

  • Chronic Illicit Drug Abusers

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Anne T Patsiokas et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

The hypothesis that female illicit drug abusers are more psychologically deviant than their male counterparts was explored by comparing groups of 121 male and 33 female therapeutic community residents on single and global measures of psychopathology and person characteristics relevant to drug abuse. Groups did not differ on such potentially confounding variables as education, intelligence, time in treatment, and ethnic composition. Gender groups …

  • Personality Relationships among Parents and Adolescent Offspring in Inpatient Treatment

    Open Access•Robert P Archer, Patricia B Sutker et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1978

The present investigation examined relationships between personality characteristics of 51 adolescents hospitalized for psychiatric treatment and their biological parents. Family members were administered the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) within one week of adolescent hospital admission. Pearson product-moment correlations were performed for all possible group comparisons on each MMPI scale. Analysis of variance of difference…

  • Male Student Professionals

Open Access•Alma Dell Smith, Dean G Kilpatrick et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

The predominantly male professions of law and medicine have wielded a powerful influence on the definition of accepted roles and behavior for women in American society. It, therefore, seemed reasonable to examine attitudes toward women, permissible sexual expression, and adherence to tradition among male representatives of these professional groups. A sample of 135 medical and 62 law students responded to paper-and-pencil surveys of attitudes on …

  • Delay of Information in Paired-Associate Learning among Incarcerated Groups of Sociopaths and Heroin Addicts

    Open Access•Eugenia L Gullick, Patricia B Sutker et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

The present study investigated the effects of information delay or delay of reinforcement on rate of acquisition in a paired-associate learning task using the anticipation method and appearance of the S-R term as knowledge of results in three groups of socially deviant males. Sociopaths, sociopathic addicts, and nonsociopathic controls ( n = 90) practiced on a paired-associate task under three conditions of reinforcement: nondelay, 4-sec. delay, …

  • Self-Reported Fears and Electrodermal Responsiveness of High and Low Trait Anxious Subjects to Fear of Failure and Other Stressors

    Open Access•Dean G Kilpatrick, Patricia B Sutker et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1975

This investigation examined the relationship between self-reported fears on the Wolpe-Lang Fear Survey Schedule and scores on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) among hospitalized male veterans and evaluated the effects of threat of failure and loss of self-esteem on the electrodermal activity of 32 male college students classified as high or low trait anxious. Results showed a significant relationship between trait anxiety and fearfulness …

  • MMPI Indices of Personality Change following Short- and Long-Term Hospitalization of Heroin Addicts

    Open Access•Patricia B Sutker, Albert N Allain et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

The present investigation examined test-retest MMPI profile patterns for two highly similar groups of hardcore heroin addicts: 30 clients admitted to 6-mo. hospitalization in the NIMH Clinical Research Center, Fort Worth and 28 addicts confined approximately 6 wk. in an inpatient hospital setting. MMPI changes following hospitalization were characterized by decreases in scale scores on almost every clinical scale with higher elevations on scales …

This investigation examined the personality characteristics of unincarcerated street addicts as compared with two groups of prisoners: those admitting a history of heroin addiction and inmates who had never experimented significantly with opium derivatives. Although the three groups did not differ on such variables as age, education, or level of intellectual functioning and were markedly antisocial as measured by felony convictions and test indic…
