Adolescents’ Positive Experiences of Psychotherapy Following Sexual Abuse: A Systematic Review
While a small body of work focuses directly on young people’s experiences of psychotherapy following sexual abuse, to our knowledge, there are no existing reviews of this literature. This systematic review was conducted using Siddaway et al.’s guidelines. Inclusion criteria were: published between 2000 and 2022; used qualitative methodologies; and captured adolescents’ perspectives. Eleven studies were identified, representing an aggregated sampl…
Siblings’ Perspectives of the Impact of Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure on Sibling and Family Relationships
Child sexual abuse (CSA) may have significant consequences for siblings; however, limited research has been conducted on the impact of the abuse on sibling and family relationships following the disclosure of CSA. This study sought to investigate sibling responses to disclosures of CSA among a group of adult siblings in Ireland, and the impact on sibling and family relationships through an online survey. A thematic analysis was conducted on a sub…
A Scoping Review of Intimate Partner Violence as It Relates to the Experiences of Gay and Bisexual Men
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health issue that encroaches beyond parameters of age, gender, sexual orientation and is the subject of extensive scholarly inquiry. Research on IPV in heterosexual couples, in particular on heterosexual women, has been prolific. However, there is a dearth of literature to document the distinct experiences of gay and bisexual men, despite the evidence of prevalence of IPV as reported equal or higher to …
Associations Between Forced and “Persuaded” First Intercourse and Later Health Outcomes in Women
The effects of nonconsensual first experiences of sexual intercourse in women are understudied. This was investigated in 3,875 adult women of whom 6.7% reported "persuaded" first-sex and 0.8% reported forced first-sex. Compared with willing first-sex, both forced and "persuaded" first-sex occurred earlier, involved a greater age difference between partners, and were associated with more lifetime sexual partners and some measures of worse psycholo…

Helping Children to Tell About Sexual Abuse: Guidance for Helpers
Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse: Delays, Non‐disclosure and Partial Disclosure. What the Research Tells Us and Implications for Practice
This paper reviews the research on disclosure of child sexual abuse with specific reference to delays in disclosing, non‐disclosure and partial disclosure of experiences of child sexual abuse. Findings from large‐scale national probability studies highlight the prevalence of both non‐disclosure and delays in disclosure, while findings from small‐scale qualitative studies portray the complexity, diversity and individuality of experiences. The poss…
A bit more understanding: Young adults' views of mental health services in care in Ireland
Child Sexual Abuse, Links to Later Sexual Exploitation/High-Risk Sexual Behavior, and Prevention/Treatment Programs
This paper reviews the literature on the nature and incidence of child sexual abuse, explores the link between child sexual abuse and later sexual exploitation, and reviews the literature on prevention strategies and effective interventions in child sexual abuse services. Our understanding of the international epidemiology of child sexual abuse is considerably greater than it was just 10 years ago, and studies from around the world are examined. …
