  • Nietzsche's ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra': A Critical Guide

    Open Access•Keith Ansell-Pearson, Paul S Loeb•BOOK•Nietzsche's 'Thus Spoke…•2022

Nietzsche regarded Thus Spoke Zarathustra as his most important philosophical contribution because it proposes solutions to the problems and questions he poses in his later books – for example, his cure for the human disposition to vengefulness and his creation of new values as the antidote to nihilism. It is also the only place where he elaborates his concepts of the superhuman and the eternal recurrence of the same. In this Critical Guide, an i…

  • A filosofia de Nietzsche é um autorretrato

    Open Access•Paul S Loeb•ARTICLE•Cadernos Nietzsche•2022

  • What Does Nietzsche Mean by “the Same” in His Theory of Eternal Recurrence

    Paul S Loeb•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2022

In this article, I examine the linguistic features in Nietzsche's presentations that have led readers to assume that “the same” means numerical identity. I also evaluate the following argument about personal identity that has been used to support this assumption: if we are not numerically identical to our recurring counterparts, then we have no reason to be concerned about the prospect of reliving our lives and Nietzsche's theory cannot have any …

  • Nietzsche's Metaphilosophy: The Nature, Method, and Aims of Philosophy

    Open Access•Paul S Loeb, Matthew Meyer•ARTICLE•Nietzsche's Metaphilosophy•2019

Recent Anglophone scholarship has successfully shown that Nietzsche's thought makes important contributions to a wide range of contemporary philosophical debates. In so doing, however, scholarship has lost sight of another important feature of Nietzsche's project, namely his desire to challenge the very conception of philosophy that has been used to assess his merits as a philosopher. In other words, contemporary scholarship has overlooked Nietzs…

With this latest book in the series, Stanford continues its English-language publication of the famed Colli-Montinari edition of Nietzsche's complete works, which include the philosopher's notebooks and early unpublished writings. Scrupulously edited so as to establish a new standard for the field, each volume includes an Afterword that presents and contextualizes the material therein. This volume provides the first English translation of Nietzsc…

  • The Colossal Moment in Nietzsche’s Gay Science § 341

    Paul S Loeb•CHAPTER•The Nietzschean Mind•2018

Section 341 of The Gay Science (GS 341) is the most famous passage in all of Nietzsche’s writings. In this chapter, I will argue that scholars have misunderstood the pivotal sentence where readers are asked whether they have ever experienced a special moment when they would have ecstatically welcomed their lives’ eternal repetition. According to the standard reading, Nietzsche characterizes this special moment as ‘ungeheuren’ in order to suggest …

  • The Priestly Slave Revolt in Morality

    Paul S Loeb•ARTICLE•Nietzsche Studien•2018

In this essay I evaluate a new and influential interpretation of Nietzsche’s idea of the slave revolt in morality. This interpretation was first proposed by Bernard Reginster and has since been extended by R. Lanier Anderson and Avery Snelson. Citing textual evidence from Beyond Good and Evil and On the Genealogy of Morality, these scholars have argued for the counterintuitive view that nobles, not slaves, instigated the slave revolt in morality.…

  • Nietzsche's Futurism

    Paul S Loeb•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2018

This essay is one of ten contributions to a special editorial feature in The Journal of Nietzsche Studies 49.2 (Autumn 2018), in which authors were invited to address the following questions: What is the future of Nietzsche studies? What are the most pressing questions its scholars should address? What texts and issues demand our urgent attention? And as we turn to these issues, what methodological and interpretive principles should guide us? The…

  • Will to Power and Panpsychism

    Paul S Loeb•CHAPTER•Nietzsche on Mind and Nature•2015

Section 36 of Beyond Good and Evil seems to offer a Schopenhauerian demonstration of panpsychist metaphysics. But this cannot be right, because the book's preceding sections presuppose Nietzsche's naturalistic project of de-anthropomorphizing our theories of the universe. Instead, Nietzsche is asking his readers to conceptually isolate the power struggle that they experience among their own psycho-physiological drives and then to imagine, counter…

  • Eternal Recurrence

    Paul S Loeb•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook Of Nietzsche•2013

This article shows that Nietzsche’s published presentations endorse the cosmological truth of eternal recurrence and that they indicate how belief in this truth can be supported with direct mnemonic evidence as well as a priori scientific proof. It also introduces a refutation of any attempt to construe Nietzsche’s doctrine as a thought experiment that would help to test or promote the affirmation of nonrecurring life.

  • The Death of Nietzsche's Zarathustra

    Open Access•Paul S Loeb•BOOK•Death of Nietzsche's Zarathustra•2010

In this study of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Paul S. Loeb proposes a fresh account of the relation between the book's literary and philosophical aspects and argues that the book's narrative is designed to embody and exhibit the truth of eternal recurrence. Loeb shows how Nietzsche constructed a unified and complete plot in which the protagonist dies, experiences a deathbed revelation of his endlessly repeating life, and then returns to hi…
