  • Local livelihoods dependence on ecosystem services

    Vera Camacho-Valdez, Andrea Sáenz‐Arroyo et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2026

Floodplains provide valuable ecosystem services (ES) for local communities that are under heavy anthropogenic pressure. This leads to progressive degradation and undermines the sustainability of rural societies. In this study, we developed a participatory approach to evaluate the dependence of local communities on the provision of riverine ES and how these contribute to livelihoods in the Usumacinta floodplain. We use causal loop techniques to an…

  • The Effective as the Actual and as the Calculable in Jean Cavaillès

    Matt Hare•ARTICLE•Noesis•2022

Jean Cavaillès’ definition of mathematics as effective thought or effective work is central to his analysis of the “objective becoming” of mathematics. This concept crosses two referents: the effective as the actual and the history of effective calculability. I examine Cavaillès’ treatment of two phases of the mathematical history of the concept: first, debates between the French analysts around effective definability, and, second, Gödel, Church …

  • Urban foraging, resilience and food provisioning services provided by edible plants in interstitial urban spaces in Mexico City

Matthew Hare, Matt Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2021

In the context of decreasing food security, and as part of the ‘100 Resilient Cities’ group, Mexico City (CDMX) has committed itself to achieving resilience through local food systems, green infrastructure and ecosystem services development. This paper reports on two surveys mapping the distribution of species of edible plants growing in publicly accessible interstitial spaces (e.g. central reservations and pavements) in subtropical, central CDMX…

  • Using Agent-Based Models for Prediction in Complex and Wicked Systems

Open Access•Gary Polhill, J Gareth Polhill et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2021

This paper uses two thought experiments to argue that the complexity of the systems to which agentbased models (ABMs) are o en applied is not the central source of di iculties ABMs have with prediction. We define various levels of predictability, and argue that insofar as path-dependency is a necessary attribute of a complex system, ruling out states of the system means that there is at least the potential to say something useful. 'Wickedness' is…

  • Processes of social learning in integrated resources management

    Open Access•Claudia Pahl‐wostl, Matt Hare•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2004•Cited by: 61•References: 3

In recent years the human dimension and governance issues have gained more and more in importance in the management of natural resources. One important aspect is to understand the processes of social learning that precede any collective decision‐making. The HarmoniCOP project developed a framework for social learning for resources management that can be interpreted as combining content management as well as social involvement processes to achieve…
