    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2024•References: 5

ENGLISH SUMMARY: The article discusses the concept of feasts as a possible important religio-phenomenological category. Against archaeological-anthropological theorizing according to which feasts are essentially battlegrounds for status competition (Hayden, Dietler), I argue (with Weismantel, Etzioni, Nahum-Claudel) for a more basic understanding of feasts as joyful gatherings of persons not normally together or eating and drinking together. Feas…

    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabelig Skriftrække•2022

    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2022•References: 3

The contribution departs from the conceptual dilemma between ‘primary religions’ and ‘archaic religions’ relative to the trifunctional paradigm of Dumézil. Jens Peter Schjødt has shown that in the Scandivian triad of deities in Uppsala, the paradigm can be seen as abstract relations, but not through the individual gods. The trifunctional paradigm is present as an implicit inspiration, realized in an independent and original constellation. Similar…

  • Neubabylonische Frömmigkeit im Alten Testament?: Die East India House Inschrift und die deuteronomisch-deuteronomistische Theologie

Jason Dietrich, Jan Dietrich et al.•CHAPTER•Religionspraxis und Individualität•2021

To love God with all your heart (Deut 6:5) and the hope that God will write the law on the hearts (Jer 31:34) are key forms and expressions of Hebrew Bible personal piety. Hitherto neglected but close parallels between these forms of personal piety are to be found in the neo-Babylonian East India House Inscription by Nebuchadnezzar II. In this paper, we shall draw some parallels and propose that personal piety in Deuteronomy and Jeremiah is being…

    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2021•References: 4

ENGLISH SUMMARY: A presentation of Philippe Descola’s model of four ontol-ogies (animism, totemism, analogism, and naturalism) and six forms of attach-ment (gift, exchange, etc.) and an argument for their relevance for the academic study of religion. The four ontologies overlap partly with Robert Bellah’s stages of cultural-religious evolution: Animism and totemism dominate in tribal religions, analogism in archaic and post-axial religions, natur…

    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2021•References: 1

Engelsk summary: This brief article is an addition to my introduction to Philippe Descola’s theory on ontologies available in this volume of RvT. Inspired by a South American myth about helpful jaguars, I discuss Lévi-Strauss’ miscomprehension of the animist ontology, which paradoxically pervades the Amerindian myths analyzed in detail in his Mythologies and other works. I also propose a reason for this miscomprehension. At the end of the fourth …

    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2019•References: 4

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the Hebrew Bible, there is no wish for a heavenly existence among human beings; God and his angels on the one hand and human beings on the other, normally maintain a safe distance from each other. Divine beings are potentially deadly for humans, and dead humans are the strongest source of impurity that threatens to encroach upon holy places. With the ‘ontological’ transformation in antique Judaism and early Christianity that …

    Open Access•Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2018•References: 2

ENGELSK SUMMARY: The sculptures on the altarpiece of Aarhus Cathedral are a good example of 'analogism', an understanding of reality (an 'ontology') that presents an ideal reality as a harmonious order. The altarpiece sought to mediate between two in principle different types of religions: archaic religion, typical of the great cultures of ancient times, claiming a divinely guaranteed good and beautiful hierarchical world, and the axial rejection…

Artiklen præsenterer og diskuterer to artikler af den amerikanske religionssociolog Robert Bellah, “Religious evolution” fra 1964 og “What is Axial about the Axial Age?” (2005).

  • Aniconic propaganda in the Hebrew Bible, or: The Possible Birth of Religious Seriousness

    Hans J Lundager Jensen•ARTICLE•Religion•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The Hebrew Bible promotes aniconistic worship: images of the god Yahweh were prohibited. In the Ten Commandments, aniconism follows immediately after the monolatrous rule not to ‘have’ other gods than Yahweh. The reason for the prohibition against ‘idols’ is Yahweh’s singularity, but not his inherent indescribability; in the Bible, there is no lack of literary images of Yahweh who is described as or compared with humans and animals as well as wit…

The article discusses the rationality behind the category ontological (or natural) impurity in the priestly parts of the Pentateuch in the Hebrew Bible. After a discussion of Mary Douglas' hypothesis from 1966, correctly rejected by Jacob Milgrom, and a semiotic reformulation of Milgrom's definition of holy/common and unclean/clean, the thesis of Milgrom and others, according to which impurity basically signifies "death", is likewise rejected. The a priori assumption of the Israelitic understanding of themselves is not a differentiation between nature and culture (between no…

Samson, socalled "judge" and "nazarite", belongs to the same anti-heroic type as the legendary Amirani from Caucasus, masterly analyzd by George Charachidzé as a transformation of Prometheus. The two of them articulate a form of life which denies culture; their necessarily victorious enemies are women and blacksmiths. The human condition, being the world of bread, iron, work and death, stands in oppostion to the golden age. In Old Testament pries…

The rite of the laying on of hands in the Hebrew Bible has been interpreted in different ways, with no final conclusion being arrived at until now. Despite the ritual and semantic diversities of the different instances, one common point unites them all: in all instances one member is singled out of an anonymous group (or a group is singled out of a bigger group). The rituals to which the laying on of hands belongs can lead to enhanced life or dea…
