An issue much discussed by Indian philosophers and Western philosophers alike is one that concerns the need to assume a continuing self (or subject of experience) in giving an account of the world and our experience of it. One of Śankara's most fundamental claims is that nirgun a brahman , ‘unqualified reality’, is the origin of the world of experience. A serious challenge is posed by the Sānkhyan philosophers in terms of a principle of material causation, that the properties manifested in the effect are inherited from the material cause.
