  • Navigating grief

    Open Access•Emma Boocock•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2025•References: 46

This paper aims to show how using blue spaces has enabled the author to rebuild parts of herself again following the death of her father. Few studies have provided personal narratives of the influence and transformative nature of blue spaces, especially in association with grief. Through the use of autoethnographic writing, the author expands knowledge on how the immersion in bodies of water can be a therapeutic accretive practice which leads to …

  • Coaching in the shadows

Open Access•Adam Nichol, P Potrac et al.•ARTICLE•Physical Education and Sport…•2023

Background Influence is at the very core of physical education and sport pedagogy. Indeed, a large and growing body of work has focused on the (inter)actions of sport pedagogues which are deemed to be influential in terms of shaping the thoughts, feelings and actions of others. In comparison, little attention has been paid to the practices of sport pedagogues that are noninfluential or unintentionally influential. That is, when pedagogues or lear…

  • Lines of Flight or Tethered Wings’

Open Access•Zoe Avner, Emma Boocock et al.•ARTICLE•Somatechnics•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 17

In this article we examine women-specific adventure sport skills training courses in the UK utilising a feminist new materialist approach. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's (1987) concepts of ‘assemblage’, ‘lines of territorialisation’, and ‘lines of flight’, we apply a new lens to ask: what type(s) of material-discursive assemblages are produced through human and non-human, discursive, and non-discursive intra-actions on women-speci…

  • Beat the Game

    Zoe Avner, J Denison et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Problem-based learning along with other game and player-centred approaches have been promoted as valuable alternatives to more traditional, skill-based, directive, and leader-centric pedagogical approaches. However, as research has shown, they are not unproblematic or straightforward to apply. Heeding to calls for more empirical studies of game-centred approaches in coaching contexts, this study explored the impact of a unique problem-based learn…

  • Realist evaluation of the Football Association’s Post Graduate Diploma (PG Dip) in Coach Development

    Sam Redgate, P Potrac et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Recent studies have provided important initial insights into the relational and micropolitical dimensions of coach educators’ and coach developers’ work. However, there remains a paucity of inquiry addressing how sporting organisations prepare these members of their workforce to achieve desired goals and objectives. This research uses realist evaluation and normalisation process theory to examine a bespoke ‘reality grounded’ learning initiative t…

  • Athletes as “Sites of Normative Intersectionality”

Adam Nichol, Adam J Nichol et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2020•References: 23

Social structure remains an equivocal term in (sport) sociology. Our understandings of its constitution and role in causally influencing behavior are arguably underdeveloped. Using a critical realist approach, this paper examined how structural entities and reflexive agency combined to influence behavior in an elite youth cricket context (e.g., athletes, coaches). A methodological bricolage was used to generate data and Elder-Vass’s theorizing pr…
