Third-party money management for adults with long-term care needs: Current practices and challenges – a scoping review
Personal money management is an important part of a self-determined life. When assistance needs increase, many care recipients require help with bills, purchases, paperwork or budget planning. Third-party money management (TPMM) is thus a prevalent care-giving task in long-term care (LTC), essential to care recipients’ wellbeing and financial security. However, research on this phenomenon is scarce, scattered over time and research locations, and…
Negate me not, negate me never: Cross-varietal distributional skews in modal negation from a diachronic perspective
The present article provides a diachronic analysis of the negation and contraction patterns of will and would in British and American English. It contrasts nineteenth- and twentieth-century data from British and American fiction, comparing the collocational preferences of negated versus non-negated and contracted versus non-contracted modals. Utilising Configural Frequency Analysis, we explore frequency differences as well as variety-specific ass…
Reflexive analytic causatives: A diachronic analysis of transitivity parameters
The present study is an exploration of the field of analytic causatives. It focuses on reflexive constructions with bring , cause , make and force . The analysis builds on Mondorf & Schneider's (2016) finding that causative bring has specialized to modal-negated-reflexive uses. It explores whether this emerging constraint reduces overlap with other causatives. A second focal point is on the nature of the constructions’ constraints. The article ap…
Einleitung: Das Fremde im Eigenen – das Eigene im Fremden . Jüdisches biographisches Schreiben über Andere
In terms of historiographical potential and literary value, depictions of the lives of others are considered inferior to autobiographies. One finds autobiographies, which promise to provide exclusive insights into the historical inner worlds, epistemically more revealing. While their study has become a very important part of Jewish Studies, investigations into the life stories of others represent a notable research gap. This issue takes this rema…
Biographische Darstellungen jüdischer Autorinnen im 19. Jahrhundert. Ludwig Geigers Arbeiten zu Dorothea Schlegel und Fanny Lewald
In 1896, the literary scholar Ludwig Geiger published the volume »Dichter und Frauen«. Two articles in the volume were devoted to the female writers Dorothea Schlegel and Fanny Lewald. The essays are characterized by the literary-historical attempt to bring together life and work as well as the inclusion of first-person documents such as letters or diary entries. The relation between Geiger and his biographical ›objects‹ is based on the discrimin…
Austria’s Long-Term Care System: Challenges and Policy Responses
Approaches to design comprehensive support systems for people in need of long-term care (LTC) have appeared on the policy agenda of European countries from the 1990ies. Austria was one of the first to implement such a system separate from health care. In this last significant expansion of its social protection system, the country established a universal and tax-funded LTC system, departing from Austria’s Bismarckian tradition while carrying along…
Exploring the effectiveness of a fitness‐app prototype for home care service users in Austria and Italy
An infinite number of fitness apps are available on various app stores. However, hardly any of them are fitted to the needs and requirements of care-dependent people. This paper investigates the effectiveness of a customised fitness-app prototype for increasing physical activity in home care service users. Home care service users from Austria and Italy were randomly assigned to two groups. In total, 216 participants were involved in the field tri…
Loss of intersective gradience as the lifeboat of a dying construction. An analysis of the diachronic change of causative bring
This paper focusses on diachronic processes which lead to the disambiguation between different constructions involving the same verb. It follows the development of bring as a periphrastic causative over the course of the Early Modern and Late Modern English periods and compares it to the development of other bring constructions. In a corpus-based analysis, it utilizes measures of cue strength as well as collostructional analysis to determine whet…
The Scarring Effect of the 2008 Economic Crisis: Growth and Growth Decline in Austria’s Nonprofit Social Services Sector
Since the 2008 economic crisis, social service providers worldwide have reported funding cuts, while the need for some social services has been increasing. This paper examines the combined and longer-term effects of such divergent developments on the nonprofit social services sector. The empirical analysis uses Austrian administrative data on six subfields of the sector covering the years 2003–2017. We investigate significant changes in the trend…
Linguistic Inquiries into Donald Trump's Language: From 'Fake News' to 'Tremendous Success
From short paratactic sentences to frequent repetition and parallelisms, Donald Trump's idiolect is highly distinctive from that of previous Presidents of the USA. Combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, this book identifies the characteristic features of Trump's language and argues that his speech style, often underestimated by the media, is strategically implemented as a persuasive device. The chapters examine Trump's tweets, inaugural…

Monetising the provision of informal long-term care by elderly people: Estimates for European out-of-home caregivers based on the well-being valuation method
Providing informal care can be both a burden and a source of satisfaction. To understand the welfare effect on caregivers, we need an estimate of the 'shadow value' of informal care, an imputed value for the non-market activity. We use data from the 2006-2007 Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe which offers the needed details on 29,471 individuals in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlan…

Informal Eldercare and Work-Related Strain
This article lends support to both the "competing demands" and the "expansion" hypotheses. Commitment to eldercare can enhance work-related outcomes but entails work-related problems if care burden and time demands of eldercare are substantial. Thus, workers with eldercare responsibilities cannot be considered less productive from the outset. An individual assessment of their situation, considering the care and work setting, is required. Findings…
The Influence of Volunteers, Donations and Public Subsidies on the Wage Level of Nonprofit Workers: Evidence From Austrian Matched Data
In this article we add to the literature analyzing wages in the nonprofit sector by estimating a wage function based on employer‐employee matched data for Austria. We concentrate on the influence of voluntary contributions on the wage level of paid workers. By using a quantile regression approach we find that the existence of volunteers reduces the wages of paid employees in nonprofit organizations. The number of volunteers does not have an influ…

Die Erinnerungsfigur des Exodus als literarisches Mittel einer zeitgeschichtlichen jüdischen Geschichtsschreibung
The Jewish authors Robert Neumann (1897-1975) and Soma Morgenstern (1890-1976), both forced to leave Austria during the Nazi period, have dealt with the subject of Exodus in their writing. Their novels ,,By the Waters of Babylon" (published 1939 in London, 1954 in Munich/Vienna) and ,,The Third Pillar" (published 1955 in the United States, 1964 in Munich/Vienna) attempt to come to terms with the experience of exile and the Shoah. The reception of…
Germany’s Social Long‐term Care Insurance: Design, Implementation and Evaluation
Across all industrialized countries, issues surrounding population ageing have captured the attention of policymakers. Among its manifold ramifications, disability‐related poverty and the projected growth in public funding of long‐term care demand close attention. Comparative studies have revealed distinct policy approaches to long‐term care across different countries, but a shared interest in market‐oriented policy design and cost containment. I…
