Broadening the evidentiary basis for clinical practice guidelines: Recommendations from qualitative psychotherapy researchers
To improve the provision of psychotherapy, many countries have now established clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of specific disorders and mental health concerns. These guidelines have typically been based on evidence from meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials with minimal consideration of findings from qualitative research designs. This said, there has been growing interest in incorporating qualitative research in guideline de…
From the Abyss of Loneliness to the Bliss of Solitude: Cultural, Social and Psychoanalytic Perspectives
Handbuch psychoanalytischer Grundbegriffe

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Process Research: A quick ride through what you should know about process (research)
This paper gives an overview of psychoanalytic process research, which brings to light the complexity of psychotherapy sessions. This complexity is so rich that many instruments intended to make the process measurable failed in the past because they initially used a strategy of complexity reduction. This method however did not help to further our understanding of the complexity involved. Three former presidents of the Society for Psychotherapy Re…
Momente und ihre Menschen: Können Now-Moments und Moments-of-Meeting genau bestimmt werden? Eine Parallelführung von Daniel Stern, Erving Goffman und Peter Fonagy
The Boston-Theory about Now-Moments, Moments-of-Meeting and “present moments” up-to-date has not founded this impressive theory in a precise transcript. What are these moments in detail? How to recognize them? There are strong affinities between the microanalytic work of the Boston-Group and social-scientific conversation analysis, but there are deviations, too. In a first part, I will sound out affinities and differences intending to become able…
Teaching research methods to psychoanalysts: Experiences from PSAID
Here we introduce the dissertation program PSAID (Postgraduate Studies for the Advancement of Individual Dissertations), conducted at the International Psychoanalytic University in Berlin, Germany. We tell stories about our experience: about a wish to sum up in a dissertation after long years of clinical practice what has been learnt in diving deeply into human experience; about the fear of losing one’s identity when something new is to be learne…

Countertransference as object of empirical research
The concept of countertransference as a robust cornerstone of psychoanalytic work has gained momentum over the last five decades. It is a prime example of elastic concepts covering the range from microprocesses to global clinical phenomena. Empirical research on the treatment process has for a long time – and for good reasons – avoided even trying to measure countertransference. We report here on various efforts for approaching a methodology for …
Growth: What reconciliation of conflicts could mean. A lesson from the history of psychoanalysis
Often, conflicts cannot be solved; they have to be endured. A hidden idea behind solving conflicts and coming to reconciliation is growth, but what does growth mean? Here growth is understood as the use of different perspectives: at first different perspectives, then their complementary use, followed by their simultaneous use, and then achieving a state of resonating alignment. Finally, growth is described as gaining excentric positionality, intr…

Gender Constructions of Male Sex Offenders in Germany: Narrative Analysis from Group Psychotherapy
Gender constructions from a project on sex offenders
The four-year group therapy of 16 sex offenders in prison was videotaped, and 21 sessions were carefully transcribed and analysed by means of conversation analysis and analysis of metaphor and narration. These qualitative methods are apt for verbal data and can be combined with psychoanalytic thinking in a productive way. New forms of process analysis can be developed. The results presented here are selected to relate to the topic of how the impr…
Listening to words, seeing images: Metaphors of emotional movement
Using three case illustrations, the new cognitive linguistic theory of metaphor is presented, and its usefulness for psychoanalytic practice is demonstrated. The step from poetic to conceptual metaphor and, further, to mental kinesics and embodied schemata, as proposed by cognitive linguistics, illustrates the closeness of this approach to the essence of psychoanalysis. The Freudian programmatic theorem, that the ego is embodied, can be applied i…
Modern Families: The Nazi Past and "Fatherlessness"
The author demonstrates, through family therapy case material, a connection between problems of the modern present and the three-generation effects of Nazism
