  • Kohut Memorial Lecture

    Amanda Kottler•ARTICLE•Psychoanalysis Self and Context•2026

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine, after attending my first IAPSP conference in 1994, that I would ever have the incredible honor and privilege of being invited to present the Kohut Memorial...

  • When the Echoes of Red and Blue Turn to Green

    Amanda Kottler•ARTICLE•Psychoanalysis Self and Context•2019

This paper describes a therapeutic process between myself and Ben who, through his drawings and our co-creation of their meaning, came to articulate and transform deeply hidden and shameful aspects of himself. I look at the material through the lenses of The Psychology of Being Human, Kohut’s early thoughts about “various selves fighting for ascendancy” and Togashi’s idea of an “intersubjective taboo”. The paper illustrates how the complex interp…

  • Rites of Passage

    Open Access•Amanda Kottler, Sally Swartz•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article attempts to make sense of the clinical psychology training experience, as a negotiation of personal and professional identity. It suggests that the training, particularly in the first year, is a rite of passage, in many respects similar to an initiation process. Rites of passage can be seen as processes marking shifts in status and social identity. In the case of training to be a psychologist this change involves the movement from la…

Over the past few years a number of initiatives against sexual harassment and violence have been launched by large corporations and South African universities, with mixed results. As an active member of one of the first projects of this kind, it became evident to Kottler how severely hampered policy making, education and prevention are by definitional problems and varied gendered and cultural constructions of the issues involved. With a view to a…

  • Damaged, Deficient or Determined? Deconstructing Narratives in Family Therapy

    Open Access•Amanda Kottler, Judith Soal•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This study attempts to challenge the prevailing understanding of family problems within the field of family therapy. Drawing on post-structuralist approaches to knowledge, truth and power, we suggest that the problems experienced by the families cannot be seen to have an objective existence, or to be internal to the ‘family unit’. Rather, the problem-saturated narratives presented by families are shaped by an investment in socially constructed kn…

  • Talking about Wolf-Whistles

    Open Access•Amanda Kottler, Sally Swartz•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 9

In this article we analyse a conversation between a man and a woman discussing the effect of wolf-whistles on women. In an attempt to reach consensus both participants appear to change their views. By blending elements of discourse and conversation analysis, the article examines the conversational outcome and the effects of gender and power on the discourse positions taken up by the participants. Wolf-whistling is a gendered activity and the impl…

  • Conversation Analysis

Open Access•Amanda Kottler, Amanda E Kottler et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 33

Conversation analysis offers valuable insight into how particular goals are achieved in conversation and is therefore a useful methodology to employ in psychological research. The aim of this article is to introduce the theoretical background and practice of conversation analysis. A review of some of the important literature in the area is introduced, after which the authors give some examples of psychological research which has combined conversa…
