Making sense of doing science
In this article, I will explore the enactive approach to science and the pragmatic motifs that guide it. In particular, in the first half of the article, I will discuss to what extent enactivism can be seen as a philosophy of nature, and by comparing it with Sellars’s interpretation of the conflict between the manifest and the scientific image of humans in the world, I will focus on the view of nature that enactivism defends. In the second part, …
Quality of Life and Psychophysical Consequences in Individuals with Intestinal Stoma
The findings highlight the need for person-centered care that addresses not only clinical aspects but also emotional and relational dimensions. Enhancing the role of trained professionals, such as enterostomal therapy nurses, and promoting targeted educational interventions may contribute to improving the quality of life in patients living with a stoma
The End of Nature and the Conflict between Eco-Social Imaginaries
This article examines the conflict between eco-social imaginaries through the lens of Sellars’s distinction between the manifest and the scientific images. It first addresses the debate on the “end of nature,” questioning the advisability of abandoning the concept of nature. Drawing on Hegel, Benjamin, and niche construction theory, it argues that a dialectical account of the organism-environment relation can complement the compositionist perspec…
The Situated Mind and the Space of Reasons
In this article I discuss the primacy that, following Sellars, Robert Brandom ascribes to the intersubjective and discursive space of reasons over all other processes in which the human mind is involved. I will compare Brandom’s perspective with that of the situated approach to the study of mind. At first, my aim is to show that the origin of intentionality has to be found in the sphere of sentience and the living body. Second, by comparing the e…
A Meta-Philosophical Introduction to the Encounter between Pragmatism and Phenomenology
The history of the encounters between pragmatism and phenomenology is long, fruitful, yet also tormented. From the time of the 19th century American phenomenology of Josiah Royce up to the arrival of Husserl’s phenomenology in North America, pragmatism was always one of the leading American philosophical movements that actively contributed to the re-elaboration of the issues and strategies of phenomenology in order to make them comply and adjust …
La complicità in gioco. Strati e dinamiche di una disposizione affettiva
Combining phenomenology with gender studies, Hegelian philosophy and current philosophy of emotions, in this article I explore the phenomenon of complicity in terms of an affective disposition. In particular, I first identify complicity with an expression of mutual empathy, then I ask whether the connection of complicity with reciprocity can be integrated with a view that acknowledges the presence of a conflictual component in this affective rela…
Spontaneity and Givenness. Natorp, Husserl, and Sellars’s Neo-Kantianism
In this article, I propose a comparison between Natorp, Husserl, and Sellars that has a twofold aim. First, I ask to what extent Sellars’s perspective can be considered to be Neo-Kantian. Second, I demonstrate that the point of divergence among these thre
