  • Organisational fragility among urban FNOs in the era of New Public Management

    Open Access•D Howard-Wagner, Karen Soldatic et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Social Issues•2023•References: 21

While Australian governments generally acknowledge that First Nations organisations (FNOs) have better reach into First Nations communities than mainstream not‐for‐profit (NFP) organisations and governments, as we document in this paper, a survey of community‐controlled FNOs in significant urban areas in New South Wales (NSW) suggests that funding and administrative arrangements in the era of New Public Management (NPM) are at odds, and in some i…

  • Transition to Renewable Energy and Indigenous People in Northern Australia: Enhancing or Inhibiting Capabilities

    J Hunt, B Riley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Development•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This paper uses the capability approach to analyse renewable energy developments on Aboriginal land in Australia’s Pilbara and Kimberley regions. These regions in the north-west of Australia have very high rates of Indigenous land tenure, and are attractive for both solar and wind power generation, particularly as developing technology makes it economically feasible to transport power over large distances. They are also remote from Australia’s el…

  • Missed opportunity: The NTER and sustainable development outcomes for Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory

    Open Access•J Hunt•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Social Issues•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This article questions why the Labor Government has failed to fundamentally change the Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER) which it inherited from the Howard government, in the face of evidence which suggests that it is a development intervention unlikely to bring about sustained change. There are two major problems which this article highlights: the coercive and denigrating approach of the NTER, and its failure to address the need for I…
