Lamster and Formicola Respond
Giddon et al. suggest that as midlevel dental providers (MLPs) are introduced, confusion can occur regarding who is a dentist and who is an MLP. They suggest that a name change is in order and that “oral physician” be used to differentiate doctoral-trained providers (dentists) from others who do not receive this level of education. The authors reference our recent editorial,1 which introduced reports from the 2010 Dunning Symposium, a meeting hel…
A summary of the 2010 Dunning Symposium
The 15th Dunning Symposium was held on November 29 and 30, 2010 in conjunction with the Greater New York Dental meeting in New York City. Since the first symposium in 1981, the symposia have addressed major issues in the field of dentistry that impact on the oral health of the public. The theme for this symposium dealt with how the practice of dentistry would emerge given healthcare reform legislation, opportunities for dentists to become more en…
The Dental Profession in Transition
During the 20th century, dentistry has evolved as a profession, one offering a full range of services, from effective prevention to complex oral and maxillofacial surgery and from basic restorative care to full rehabilitation of severely compromised dentitions. Our understanding of the underlying pathology that accounts for oral diseases and our knowledge about the interaction between oral diseases and diseases and disorders of different organ sy…
Mobilizing the Community for Better Health
Strengthening the Oral Health Safety Net
The mission of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Community Voices initiative is to improve access to primary, behavioral, and oral health care for uninsured and underserved populations. Poor access to dental services and growing racial/ethnic disparities in oral health demand new interventions and models of delivery.1 Oral health is a core component of all 13 Community Voices “learning laboratories.” Three of these programs—Northern Manhattan’s Commu…
Improving the Oral Health of Prisoners to Improve Overall Health and Well-Being
General health and oral health are linked. The surgeon general’s report on the state of the nation’s oral health indicates that you can’t have one without the other. The same report notes that while the oral health of the nation improved significantly over the 20th century, there are major disparities in oral health among subpopulations.1 The formal call for papers for this issue of the Journal yielded no papers on oral health in the prison syste…
Defining Interdisciplinary Research
Objective. To summarize findings from a systematic exploration of existing literature and views regarding interdisciplinarity, to discuss themes and components of such work, and to propose a theoretically based definition of interdisciplinary research. Data Sources/Study Setting. Two major data sources were used: interviews with researchers from various disciplines, and a systematic review of the education, business, and health care literature fr…

Dental Caries Experience in Northern Manhattan Adolescents
Adolescents in northern Manhattan have higher caries prevalence and higher levels of untreated caries than their national counterparts. Carious lesions progress to pulpal involvement in a high percentage of northern Manhattan children and require extraction or root canal therapy as treatment. There is an urgent need for affordable and available dental primary care services targeted to economically disadvantaged communities
