  • Blasphemie

Open Access•Jürgen Mohn, Matthias Gockel et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Blasphemie•2020

Denn »Blasphemie« …

  • How to Read Karl Barth with Charity

    Open Access•Matthias Gockel•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2016

IFor almost a decade now, a dispute over the doctrines of Election and the Trinity has occupied Anglophone interpreters of Karl Barth. After the publication of a volume featuring the main contenders 1 and an essay written in the spirit of dialogue, 2 one might have hoped for a respectful mutual acknowledgment without rapprochement.A recent book 3 puts such hopes on hold.In order to assess the book, we should remember that Barth hardly qualifies as…

  • Redemption and Transformation

    Matthias Gockel•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2016

The article discusses Richard Wagner’s last music-drama, which today is the traditional Good Friday “opera” in New York, Vienna, and other venues around the globe. I argue that Parsifal utilizes traditional Christian symbols and thereby transforms them, in order to help transform the world of the audience. The first part of the article summarizes the dramatic conflict and analyzes how the work appropriates the Christian symbolism of the Lord’s Su…

  • “Be Not Overcome by Evil, but Overcome Evil With Good”—an Orientational Approach to Suffering and Evil

    Open Access•Matthias Gockel•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2009

I discuss two recent books by Ingolf U. Dalferth, which consider the problem of suffering and evil. Dalferth argues that evil is defined by events where someone experiences ills, not by an act of the will or an evil intention, as Kant thought. Suffering is seen in relation to evil, evil in relation to God, and God in relation to the history of Jesus Christ, in whom God created new life through the overcoming of evil. Christianity shall proclaim t…
