  • Cittadinanze coloniali arcaiche. Appunti su Massalia, Siracusa e Apollonia sullo Ionio

    Open Access•Maurizio Giangiulio•ARTICLE•Erga-Logoi Rivista di storia…•2026

Archaic colonial citizenships. Notes on Massalia, Syracuse and Apollonia on the Ionian Sea Among the citizen bodies of the Greek colonies in the West, there are some notable cases in which the group of people who ‘participate in the community’ is numerically narrow, to varying degrees. Massalia is an example of a community whose body of political participants is small, but has its own identity and political and judicial powers. Pre-Gelonian Syrac…

  • Archaic and classical Magna Graecia

Maurizio Giangiulio•CHAPTER•The World of the Western Greeks•2025

This chapter does not simply outline the history of Greek colonisation in southern Italy from the sixth to the mid-fourth century BC, but considers the regional context, paying attention to local societies and the forms of interaction between indigenous societies of the interior with coastal areas and Greek settlements. A plural and processual view of Magna Graecia is proposed, which examines interactions and entanglements, and is not shaped by c…

  • Appunti di storiografia oracolare. Rileggendo L’Oracle de Delphes di Marie Delcourt

    Open Access•Maurizio Giangiulio•ARTICLE•Mythos•2024

  • Decentralising Delphi

    Open Access•Maurizio Giangiulio•CHAPTER•Divination and Prophecy in the…•2023

Delphi did not play a crucial part in the creation and circulation of the predictive oracles. After recalling the importance that the modern narrative of ancient Greek history accords to the idea of Delphi, the relationship between oracular texts, events and historical narrative tradition is discussed, focusing on the question of whether the oracles are pertinent to the event or to the narration of the event. There are reasons to assume that the …

  • Commemorating War and War Dead

Maurizio Giangiulio, Elena Franchi et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Commemorating War and War Dead•2019

Since Bouthoul's seminal work on polemology (1951), war studies have been increasingly influenced by sociology, psychology and psychoanalysis, memory studies, and even literary theory; while also weathering the storms of the cultural turn and, more generally, postmodernism. These are challenges that raised new questions, or offered new answers. How is war memorialized and commemorated? How do individuals react to war trauma? How are individual re…

  • Oligarchies of ‘Fixed Number’ or Citizen Bodies in the Making

    Maurizio Giangiulio•BOOK•Defining Citizenship in Archaic…•2018•Cited by: 3

This chapter rejects the idea that the history of the archaic polis was defined by the succession of different constitutions and highlights the impact of such an Aristotelian model on the scholarly tradition of ‘constitutional antiquities’. The notion of archaic oligarchies and of oligarchies of fixed number is part and parcel of this tradition, but it is no longer tenable. A thorough investigation of the evidence shows that the Thousand in Colop…

  • Douketios

    Open Access•Maurizio Giangiulio•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Douketios was the military and political leader of the Sikels who, after the fall of the tyrants of Syracuse (466 BCE ), tried to unite the natives of southeastern Sicily into a league. All we know about him comes from Diodorus of Sicily (11.76, 78, 88–92; 12.8, 29), whose information goes back to the Sicilian historian Timaeus of Tauromenium.

  • Anaxagoras

    Open Access•Maurizio Giangiulio•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Anaxagoras, reportedly the first Presocratic philosopher to come to Athens, was born in Klazomenai in 499/8 bce . The evidence for his life and work is to be found in a confused biographical sketch by Diogenes Laertius (DK 59 A 1). According to the most thorough modern treatment (Mansfeld 1990), Anaxagoras arrived in Athens in 457/6 and stayed there for twenty years, until he was charged with impiety and banished from the city (Plut. Per . 32). H…

    I. Historical Memory, Invention of the Past, and Collective Identity: The Nature and Function of Foundation Tales 0 RIG IN s are crucial. As anthropological studies have shown, every society’s sense of collective identity is established and expressed by traditions about its past. It is the social memory that lends continuity to the awareness of the distinctive nature of one group’s experience. Thus, to recollect one’s own past is immediately to i…
