This article provides a succinct review of the history and technological development of PhiloBiblon, one of the pioneer Digital Humanities projects for the study of the primary sources of the medieval and early modern literatures of the Iberian Peninsula. The warp and weft of its history are the four bibliographies that comprise it: BETA (Bibliografía Española de Textos Antiguos), BITECA (Bibliografia de Textos Antics Catalans, Valencians i Balea…

  • PhiloBiblon y el mundo wiki

    Open Access•Charles B Faulhaber•ARTICLE•Magnificat Cultura i Literatura…•2022

After a brief review of the technological changes in PhiloBiblon since 1987, there follows a description of the current project, “PhiloBiblon: From Siloed Databases to Linked Open Data via Wikibase: Proof of Concept”. The current rigid structure, with its ten relational tables and almost 1,300 data fields, is abandoned in favor of a much more flexible structure of “triples,” records based on a series of statements of the type Entity + Property + …

  • El manuscrito del 'Cancionero de Baena' (PN1)

    Open Access•Charles B Faulhaber, Óscar Perea-Rodríguez•ARTICLE•Magnificat Cultura i Literatura…•2018

It begins with a detailed examination of the codicologicalaspects of the manuscript, which serve to date its origin to around 1465. My purpose is very straightforward: to examine, as a group, the texts translated from Hebrew or Arabic into one of the medieval Romance vernaculars of the Iberian Peninsula, Castilian, Catalan, or Portuguese, and to seek to identify their commonalities and differences. Why these texts? What subject areas do they represent? When were they translated? Were they translated directly from the original language into the target language, or via one or more …

  • The Hawk in Melibea's Garden

    Charles B Faulhaber•ARTICLE•Hispanic Review•1977

THE opening scene of the Celestina, the meeting between Calisto and Melibea, has been the object of much critical and scholarly comment. While most critics and most readers have taken it at face value, simply assuming that the encounter took place in Melibea's garden in the manner described in the argumento to Act I, in 1957 M. de Riquer, underlining some of the discrepancies between Act I and the remainder of the work, tried to show that the two…
