  • Beyond Vulnerabilities. Gendered Forms of Resistance During the Pandemic Crisis

    Open Access•L Acciari•ARTICLE•Moving the Social•2025

This paper proposes to explore social relations of gender and care during the Covid-19 crisis in Latin America. Based on empirical examples of actions led by domestic workers in Brazil and the Dominican Republic, I argue that gender can be a resource for collective action. Gender is usually understood as a factor of inequality in disaster contexts, rendering women more ‘vulnerable’. During the Covid-19 pandemic, women were hit harder by unemploym…

    Open Access•L Acciari•ARTICLE•Tempo Social•2025

This paper provides a reflection on decolonial and feminist struggles in the Brazilian Amazon. Less often categorized as a conflict-affected area, the Amazon is, nonetheless, faced with constant violence, from feminicide to deforestation, land invasions and attacks on Indigenous peoples. Based on the unique training experience "Advocacy in Gender, Race and Ethnicity," led by the Instituto Mulheres da Amazônia (Institute Women of the Amazon -, IMA…

  • Caring is resisting: Lessons from domestic workers' mobilizations during Covid‐19 in Latin America

    Open Access•L Acciari•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Domestic workers were one of the most negatively affected groups by COVID‐19 in Latin America, yet they have also been resisting and mobilizing in impressive and innovative ways. This article shows that domestic workers' organizations were able to adapt to an extremely adverse context in order to protect their members and defend their rights. Furthermore, their mobilizations provide an alternative vision of society grounded on love and solidarity…

  • Domestic Worker Organizing in Neo-Authoritarian Brazil

    Open Access•Jana Silverman, L Acciari•ARTICLE•New Labor Forum•2022•Cited by: 1

Brazil is a country marked by historically rooted social, political, and economic inequalities. These are linked primarily to the centuries-long legacy of slavery—over five million slaves were trafficked to Brazil from 1501 to 1866,1 over five times the number brought to the United States before 1865—and to the dependent form of capitalist development adopted by national elites. In 1888, Brazil was the last country to formally abolish slavery, al…

  • Practicing Intersectionality: Brazilian Domestic Workers’ Strategies of Building Alliances and Mobilizing Identity

    Open Access•L Acciari•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2021

Domestic workers, as essentially black women in highly precarious conditions, lacking social protection, and often not recognized as proper workers, are considered particularly hard, or even impossible, to organize compared to the “standard” male industrial worker. Yet they have been mobilizing for decades in several countries, including Brazil, where they won new labor rights in 2015. Through an ethnographic study of domestic workers’ unions in …

This article presents the results from a survey on the impact of COVID-19 on domestic workers in 14 Latin American countries. The data reveal a massive employment and social crisis, with about half of respondents having been dismissed or suspended while they had no access to social protection. We further demonstrate the harms on the health and safety of domestic workers, with evidence of pre-existing health conditions making them more vulnerable,…

    L Acciari, Valeria Ribeiro Corossacz•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Genre•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

  • Becoming ambivalent subjects of labour rights: Subaltern Mobilisations, the Law and the State

    L Acciari•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2021•References: 34

This article engages with feminist debates on the possibilities and limitations of a politics of rights through a study of domestic workers' mobilisations in Brazil. Although rights are always ambivalent or limited, they are nonetheless necessary to subaltern groups and represent one of their main repertoires of contention. More specifically, I propose to look empirically at what rights do once they are won, and how a legislative victory affects …

  • Decolonising Labour, Reclaiming Subaltern Epistemologies: Brazilian Domestic Workers and the International Struggle for Labour Rights

    Open Access•L Acciari•ARTICLE•Contexto Internacional•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 50

This study explores the labour rights discourse produced by Brazilian domestic workers. It shows that the 2015 Brazilian legislation which extended labour rights to domestic workers was not simply a 'boomerang effect' of ILO Convention 189 on decent work for domestic workers, or a case of the 'vernacularisation' of global rights. Indeed, domestic workers have agitated for equal labour rights since 1936, and articulated the specific rights contain…
