  • The Politics of Authenticity

    Joachim C Häberlen, Mark Keck-Szajbel et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Politics of Authenticity•2018

Following the convulsions of 1968, one element uniting many of the disparate social movements that arose across Europe was the pursuit of an elusive “authenticity” that could help activists to understand fundamental truths about themselves—their feelings, aspirations, sexualities, and disappointments. This volume offers a fascinating exploration of the politics of authenticity as they manifested themselves among such groups as Italian leftists, E…

  • A Cultural Shift in the 1970s

    Open Access•Mark Keck-Szajbel•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2015•Cited by: 2

This essay explores how an international project between socialist nations unraveled transnationally. I explain the cultural shift toward taboo topics in the 1970s and argue that the shift was forced by two factors: first, the rise of a new generation of youngsters unaffected by World War II, and second the relative ease of transnational mobility. Starting in 1972, Poland, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia allowed citizens to travel more freely in…

  • Alienating Labor

    Mark Keck-Szajbel•ARTICLE•German History•2015

Eszter Bartha’s Alienating Labor: Workers on the Road from Socialism to Capitalism in East Germany and Hungary sets out to explain one fundamental question. Why did workers reject a system that had as its ideological goal the creation of a workers’ dictatorship? Although many authors in the past twenty years have effectively explained the reason for the fall of Communism, Bartha’s question has yet to be satisfactorily answered. In this work, the …

  • Der geteilte Ostblock

    Mark Keck-Szajbel•ARTICLE•German History•2013

In the summer of 1984, the well-known molecular biologist Peter Bohley celebrated his mother’s birthday with his family close to Prague. Earlier the same year, Bohley had been expatriated from East Germany due to his critical views of the Communist Party and the state. Prague was the most convenient location for him to meet with his family, since travel to East Germany—thanks to laws established in 1977—was off limits for former citizens of the G…

  • The Politics of Travel and the Creation of a European Society

    Mark Keck-Szajbel•ARTICLE•Global Society•2010

Reflecting on debates concerning the influx of Eastern Bloc travellers, refugees, and immigrants to East Germany in 1990, this contribution details the development and the legacy of the so-called “borders of friendship”, an open border project in the 1970s and 1980s between Eastern Bloc countries, which allowed citizens to travel without visa or passport. As early as 1972, tens of millions of citizens from Poland, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia…
