  • Mass Media's Role in Terrorism

Open Access•Michael Oswald, Michael T Oswald et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science Quarterly•2023

The propaganda videos of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) became a widespread issue throughout the Western world between 2014 and 2017. The problem was not that the videos went viral on social media but that people learned about them and their content through the news. Each ISIL video posted on social media provoked some kind of media reaction that generated public attention. Given that a common framing effect leads people to think thr…

  • Strategic clustering in right-wing-populism? ‘Green policies’ in Germany and France

Open Access•Michael Oswald, Meike Fromm et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Vergleichende…•2021

Past research pointed to the idea that right-wing ideology and climate-change skepticism are inherently linked. Empirical reality proves differently however, since right-wing populist parties are starting to adapt pro environmentalist stances. In this paper, we look into two prominent cases of diametrical diverging environmental strategies by right-wing-populist-parties: France’s Rassemblement National and Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland. I…

  • Legislator Adoption of the Fake News Label

    Open Access•Mike Cowburn, Michael Oswald•ARTICLE•The Forum•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 15

We examine the extent to which Republican members of the House of Representatives have attempted to delegitimize established media by adopting the fake news label on Twitter since Donald Trump’s election. We find that a significant minority of Republican representatives used the fake news label on Twitter. Ideology, measured through roll-call voting behavior (DW-NOMINATE), was the strongest indicator of likely adoption, with conservative represen…

  • Effects of group composition on agonistic behavior of captive pigtail macaques, Macaca nemestrina

    Open Access•J Dazey, K Kuyk et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1977•References: 7

We surveyed agonistic behaviors of 20 captive groups of pigtail macaques ( Macaca nemestrina ) housed under identical spatial conditions. Fifteen groups contained one male each; the other five groups contained no adult males. Groups included six to twelve adult females, some of which had infants with them. We found no relationship between social density of groups and incidence of agonistic behavior, but significantly more contact aggression (grab…
