  • The Making of the Rabbi-Scholar in Late Ancient Palestine

    Open Access•Moulie Vidas•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2025

This article identifies a development in rabbinic discourse about Torah study. Whereas early texts contrast study with activities like earning a living, the Palestinian Talmud presents a new debate in which study stands in binary opposition to activities otherwise considered part of the life of Torah, such as good deeds and prayer. This debate shaped the eventually dominant view of the rabbinic sage as primarily, or even exclusively, a scholarly …

  • Late Ancient Knowing

Catherine Michael Chin, Moulie Vidas•EDITOR•BOOK•Late Ancient Knowing•2015

In this collection of essays, scholars from a range of disciplines explore the activity of knowing in late antiquity by focusing on thirteen major concepts from the intellectual, social, political, and cultural history of the period. They ask two questions about each of these concepts: what did late ancient people know about them, and how was that knowledge expressed in people’s actions? Late Ancient Knowing integrates intellectual history, post-…

  • Late Ancient Knowing

Catherine Michael Chin, Moulie Vidas•BOOK•Late Ancient Knowing•2015

Late Ancient Knowing explores how people in late antiquity went about knowing their world and how this knowing shaped late ancient lives. Each essay is dedicated to a single concept--'Animal, ' 'Demon, ' 'Countryside, ' 'Christianization, ' 'God'--studying the ways in which individuals and societies in this period created and interacted with visible and invisible realities. Rather than narrating late ancient history based on facts defensible in m…

  • Tradition and the Formation of the Talmud

Moulie Vidas•BOOK•Tradition and the Formation of…•2014

Tradition and the Formation of the Talmud offers a new perspective on perhaps the most important religious text of the Jewish tradition. It is widely recognized that the creators of the Talmud innovatively interpreted and changed the older traditions on which they drew. Nevertheless, it has been assumed that the ancient rabbis were committed to maintaining continuity with the past. Moulie Vidas argues on the contrary that structural features of t…

»Vielmehr bietet [der Kommentar] auf höchstem Niveau eine substantielle Auseinandersetzung mit den Hintergründen, den Zusammenhängen, der Theorie und der Praxis des Grundgesetzes. • Revelation, Literature, and Community in Late Antiquity

Philippa Townsend, Moulie Vidas•EDITOR•BOOK•Revelation, Literature, and…•2011

This volume stems from a conference held at Princeton University, which brought together leading scholars in the study of ancient religions. Claims to divine revelation are not simply a common trope in ancient religious texts: they often determine the structure of these texts and of the communities that produce them. The authors of the studies collected here examine the literary and social functions of revelation in late antiquity from early Chri…
